Fighting champ was recruiter for Roman army

Millennia before modern-day military recruiters talked up potential soldiers in shopping malls or put up posters, one Roman city took a rather different approach to recruiting soldiers for the emperor's army.

A newly translated inscription, dating back about 1,800 years, reveals that Oinoanda, a Roman city in southwest Turkey, turned to a mixed martial art champion to recruit for the Roman army and bring the new soldiers to a city named Hierapolis, located hundreds of miles to the east, in Syria.

His name was Lucius Septimius Flavianus Flavillianus and he was a champion at wrestling and pankration, the latter a bloody, and at times lethal, mixed martial art where contestants would try to pound each other unconscious or into submission.

Flavillianus proved to be so successful as a military recruiter that it was decreed that he be made a "cult figure in the band of heroes" after he died, with each tribe of the city erecting statues in his honor. The inscription, written in Greek, was engraved on the base of a statue found in Oinoanda's agora (a central public space) and would have been erected by the people of the city. Discovered by a team in 2002, it wasn't until now that researchers translated and published it.

"This is a very unusual piece of evidence that has come to light," said Nicholas Milner, a researcher with the British Institute at Ankara, who published the translation in the most recent edition of the journal Anatolian Studies. [Photos of Inscription & Roman Combat Sports]

Milner explained that in the Roman Empire, this sort of "heroization" is very rare.

Champion athlete
The inscription hails Flavillianus as being a "champion athlete," and, from other inscriptions found at Oinoanda, researchers know that the two sports he won championships in were wrestling and pankration.

Pankration was such a bloody sport that it had only two known rules: no eye-gouging and no biting. Aside from these restrictions, anything was fair game. Philostratos, an ancient writer who lived around the same time as Flavillianus, wrote that pankration competitors are skillful in different types of strangulation. "They bend ankles and twist arms and throw punches and jump on their opponents," (Translation from the book "Arete: Greek sports from ancient sources," Stephen Gaylord Miller, 2004). [Roman Gladiator's Tombstone Reveals Fatal Foul]

By the time he took up duties recruiting soldiers, Flavillianus would have been a mature man who had fought and prevailed in many of these contests. His father even boasted about his son's success in an inscription on his own mausoleum writing that Flavillianus, "who having trained at pankration won crowns for victories in sacred games."

This experience as a champion fighter, and the fame that came with it, would have helped Flavillianus in his task. "He would have been able to judge suitable recruits, and he probably knew lots of suitable recruits," said Milner.? Also "being a top athlete was a kind of celebrity status in Roman times," he said. "A celebrity would have a greater ability to drum up support and large numbers of volunteers than somebody who was not a celebrity." It is possible, however, that some of the soldiers Flavillianus recruited were conscripted against their will.

Man of mystery
Flavillianus would have personally escorted his recruits to Hierapolis, but beyond that, Milner said, scholars don't know if the champion joined the Roman army himself.

Milner isn't sure why Flavillianus became an army recruiter, though he suggests he was likely motivated by honor. If he hadn?t done the job it would have fallen to the community at large (especially those who were wealthy) to drum up recruits.

"This was a society that was driven by the competition for honor, particularly at the top of the city," Milner explained. "They were competing to outshine one another in the eyes of their local community and hopefully also in the eyes of the Roman authorities."

Modern-day parallels
Ironically, many of the issues mentioned in the inscription are those that confront us today. Over the last decade, mixed martial arts has become a popular sport in western culture, albeit with many more rules. Military recruitment methods are also a hot topic today. Even the enemy the ancient Roman recruits would potentially have been fighting, the Persians, based in modern-day Iran, are today seen by some as a potential adversary for the United States and other nations.

These parallels between the ancient world and modern times are not lost on Milner. He explained that Roman civilization, with the external threats they faced, tended to be fairly militarized. The idea of using a celebrity athlete as a "rallying point" for recruitment is an idea that could well be used today.

"If we were faced with a similar situation we might well find ourselves responding in rather similar ways," Milner said. "In some ways, the people of the ancient world were not so different from us and we can see ourselves in them."

Mega Millions jackpot hits record high - The Spectator

?$500 million. That is the current Mega Millions national jackpot, as of Wednesday night, that has VSU students and faculty rushing off to buy tickets.
?

This record high is an increase from Tuesday night?s prize of $363 million, which had no winner.
?

Even those that don?t normally buy lottery tickets are taking the time out to buy one-dollar tickets with hopes that one of these tickets will wind up winning the lion?s share of the largest lottery jackpot in American?s history.
?

For instance, Daniel Garcia, a marketing junior, someone who rarely plays the lottery, expressed a desire to play after the huge numbers were announced. ???Yeah, I saw it the other day,? Garcia said. ?I actually wanted to play it after that.?

?Eileen Lowers, a computer science and anthropology junior, who works in the Odum Library, also expressed a desire to play. ???My family plays, but I personally haven?t thought about it,? Lowers said. ?I think I might have to buy some now.?

?Lindsey Wilson, a 21-year-old cashier at Blazing Brew, said, ?I think I?ll have to go out and buy a ticket, especially if it?s that high.?

?Others in the community play a little more often.

??Yes, I am aware of the $500 million [jackpot],? Mainnie Jenkins, a cashier in the University Center, said. ?I play it every day.?

?Matthew Patel, a cashier at the Smitty?s gas station, reported an increased amount of lottery sales over the past few days. ?People have come in to buy tickets a lot more frequently,? Patel said. ?About three to four times as much as before.?

?Patel also expressed his own desire to play. ?I?m going to buy two [of them] myself,? Patel said.

?This record-breaking jackpot has inspired hopes and ideas, and the idea of what one would do with this jackpot has made those here at VSU wonder.

??If I won,? Lowers said, ?I would pay off all my debts, finish college, go on a trip around the world and spread the rest throughout my family.?

?April Thomas, early childhood education major, said, ?I would make sure my family is straight, and then start my own business. I would also invest some of that money into other businesses and save some to make sure I do not go broke or be in debt.?

?Garcia said, ?I would give the money to my family and friends to enjoy it, and then I would probably just save it and then use it when I need to live off of it, and I would finish school.?

Zach Gravette, a special education freshman, said, ?I would pay off tuition for the next eight years. I would buy a house, a car, buy my parents a house, a car, invest and that?s about it.?

Josh Cates, another special education freshman, said, ?If I won it, I would probably buy my parents something, a house, and probably new cars, pay off school, buy me something and the rest I?ll save up.?

Another student was a little more ambitious.

??I would spend it on a lot of unnecessary things and some useful things, like education (pay that off first) and then pay off my bills and make sure my life?s set straight, and then try to invest it so it can grow more and hopefully I won?t have to get a job,? Jerry Hinkle, a political science junior, said.

The drawing for the Mega Millions lottery will be held on Friday night at 11 p.m and the odds of a ticket winning are 1 in 176 million.

Ben Cousins: 'Consoles will adapt or die' | Game development ...

It would probably take something extraordinary like a ten-year gardening leave contract, concealed in confidentiality agreements, to prevent Ben Cousins from discussing the demise of console gaming.

He isn?t simply a director who resigned from Electronic Arts. He is a sharp and outspoken businessman who, since 1999, has accumulated privileged knowledge of the traditional games sector across two console generations.

Now he?s gone; fleeing to the mobile and social sector that he, rightly or wrongly, portrays as if it were a lifeboat escape from a sinking tanker of discs and boxes.

Unlike the executives that shuffle sideways from one traditional publisher to the next, Cousins has abandoned that side of the business entirely. Today he runs the Sweden division mobile group Ngmoco, owned by Asia?s casual games titan Dena.

He can say what he wants, and does.

Tomorrow he will be in London to keynote the inaugural F2P conference, to discuss the past and future of freemium games.

In the Q&A below, Develop discussed some of the themes he will be speaking on.

Tell us more about what you?ll be discussing during your F2P keynote.

I?ve been working in freemium since the 2006 on PlayStation Home. We really didn?t have a clue what we were doing back then and freemium was just happening in Korea.

I think looking back it is easier to forget how completely different the gaming landscape was in 2006. We had this almost completely predominant packaged goods business back then, and all the concerns were about making great 3D graphics, building multiplayer into your games. The main subject of discussion was about sequels and lack of innovation.

At that time I was working with a team in Korea for Battlefield Heroes, which was a real learning experience.

Korean game developers are often seen as being far ahead of the curve when it comes to online content. Was it an eye opener to see how they operated?

Yeah it was. Some of the things they said about freemium and social at the time have completely become commonplace these days. They originated this idea of releasing your game and building it in front of your customers ? to shape your game from community feedback.

That was a completely new and radical idea for us. It took us a while to get out of our old-world mentality and adopt to these new ways of thinking.

But the western world in general was behind on this. Even when we announced Battlefield Heroes, I think in 2007, there was a lot of skepticism about this type of game.

People didn?t agree that this free-to-play model would work, even though it was working amazingly in places like Korea.

These days, of course, we have numerous huge free-to-play games like Team Fortress and League of Legends and the rest.

It?s been really interesting to see how these perceptions have changed. Really without realising it, the west now has this incredibly popular and new way of playing games.

Would you agree that the frontrunners of the free-to-play business model are of a certain genre? Can freemium be applied to many more game types?

Well ultimately it?s a business model that is separate from the platforms they?re hosted on. Social games, or Facebook games, are one variety. Then you have other games like League of Legends, and freemium on mobile is becoming a big business too.

It?s true that the headline-grabbing free-to-play games are the ones that you see on Facebook, but there is a whole industry behind this model.

The only platform where freemium isn?t making a huge impact is on the consoles and that?s because the console holders, as I understand it, are scared of it. They don?t want to get involved in free-to-play because it could break their business model.

There is the argument that free-to-play builds direct communication lines between players and developers, and so it takes the platform owners out of the equation, which is something they want to avoid.

Yes it?s a very dangerous attitude for them, I think. There will be a perception within these companies, because they are very inexperienced in this area, that they will be thinking that if they allow a high-quality free-to-play experience on their console it will eat into sales of premium games.

They will be thinking they make more money, from a licensing fees standpoint, from packaged goods than from virtual currency.

I think that?s misunderstanding the way the business model works, to be honest.

Perhaps at some stage they?ll have to adopt to this model, if it continues to grow in popularity and, perhaps, allure more of the core market.

Yes it will be ?adopt or die? for the console holders. I spoke at GDC about the challenges that the traditional platform holders face as the likes of Google and Apple and Facebook ? which are really wealthy companies ? move into their territory.

These new competitors have already opened up their platforms. I?m not sure anyone at Apple really wanted iPads and iPhones to be so closely linked to games systems, but they opened the platform and the business model and it thrived. I mean, I think about half of App Store revenues last year were from free-to-play games.

I think the most recent study claimed it was 70% of all revenues.

And I think that number will only get higher. I think it will get to ninety per cent and rise even further. This is essentially a economics principal known as reduction to marginal cost, which theorises that if something costs nothing to distribute then someone in the marketplace will try and sell it for nothing to gain customers.

Maybe that?s what the platform holders are scared of. Maybe they think that if someone creates a Call of Duty game that?s free-to-play then they?ll lose all the licensing fees associated with sales of the premium edition.

There is still a market desire for premium content, though, and surely certain freemium models can distort that?

I don?t think so, no. I can give you many examples of freemium games in Asia that now have made more than a billion dollars in lifetime revenue.

I would guess that League of Legends will be a billion dollars in lifetime revenue as well. As soon as people crack the code in terms of making money from free-to-play, then you?ll once again get this arms race for quality much like we have now.

I think there is a good chance in ten years time that freemium games of incredibly high production values will be the norm.

Do you see this as the predominant model for all games?

Certainly the PC games space is already accepting it, and freemium is already dominating the mobile space too.

This trend will continue on all platforms that are open, and the console holders will have to ask themselves serious questions. Do consoles become the only place where you get that kind of experience, or do people start moving away from consoles onto other platforms because they aren?t adapting, and if that were to happen, will games consoles even be a viable business model?

There?s a very interesting few years ahead of us.

What interests Develop in particular is the re-education of the game development workforce. You can see it in the UK right now; there are so many traditional triple-A developers now suddenly running small independent start-ups discussing ARPU and player retention tactics. They used to be obsessed with feature lists and multiplayer.

I was talking about this recently. The UK is in a really funny position. Sweden never really had much of a packaged goods industry. DICE is a big studio and Avalanche is fairly sized, but there is now a big workforce building games because of non-console platforms.

What the UK games industry tends to not have is a vast entrepreneurial culture, with established ties to venture capital firms. So Britain?s almost stuck between the old and new, and you wonder how it?s going to get out of this glut.

I mean there aren?t any huge start-ups in the mobile and social scene in the UK -

Well there?s Bossa, there?s Mind Candy, there?s Ustwo, Makie Labs, Inensu-

-I remember people were saying Runescape was going to be the next big thing, but they haven?t really hit the heights of what, say, Bigpoint has. There hasn?t been that social or mobile games sensation in the UK, and I just hope that happens.

But going back to the re-education of games developers, as you call it, there is a trend in any business sector that goes through a revolution where the most senior people stick to what they know and the young people are quicker to adopt to a new model.

I think it?s a shame, really, that a lot of people in the traditional gaming industry seem very resistant, almost aggressively resistant, to making free-to-play games.

There was only a few companies that successfully transitioned from the arcade to console business. Nintendo did it, Sega did okay, and then you have the likes of Midway and Atari who never got in their stride.

Did you see Iwata?s speech at GDC last year?

Some of the things he says makes me really fear for the future of Nintendo.

I think there is a cognitive dissonance at Nintendo in terms of getting their heads around what?s actually happening to the industry, which is such a shame because they make such fantastic games.

With the App Store, what tends to happen is the good games rise to the top. Under Nintendo?s system there is more negotiation and arranging marketing and promotion.

From a user-perspective, when you go on the App Store and you look at the top selling games, most of them are good quality and good value for money.

I actually feel more optimistic about the future of PC games than the consoles, to be honest.

Why?s that?

Because the new platforms are moving directly onto the console?s market. One of the reason why consoles sell 170 million units is because of the many causal players who buy just one or two games per year.

Those casual players, who are the kind of engine room of the console economy, are now interested in social or mobile games.

I just think the platform holders? billion dollar investments in new hardware is no longer sustainable.

Botox-An Anti-Aging Treatment

Aging is the natural phenomena in human beings.Wrinkles in face and hands are the common sign of aging.Aging can be caused by two types-either caused by the genes we inherit which is called intrinsic (internal) aging or extrinsic (external). As aging progresses, wrinkling is due to a few processes and the most notable one is the loss of collagen and elastin in the skin. This results in a lower tensile strength.Wrinkles can be successfully treated with? anti wrinkle protein-BOTOX. In Cosmetic use the amount of toxin used is small and extremely safe. This toxin reversibly weakens the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles that appear when you animate your face. This toxin acts by blocking neurotransmitters to the muscle. Thus blocks the muscular contraction.Since these muscles no longer contract, the wrinkles they produce are also minimized.

Thus, only wrinkles that are produced or enhanced by muscular actions are mitigated by botox treatment and other wrinkles, lines and folds that are not primarily a product of muscle contractions will not be get affected.Botox use is unwise to the muscles that produce important functional actions that botox cannot be allowed to interfere with, such as movements of the lips,. Therefore the primary site for using this botox is around the eyes where loss (or partial loss) of muscular action will not cause any functional problems. Once you have wrinkles, there are some techniques for reducing them.

The common signs and factors which cause aging are:

Signs:

Factors:

  • Sun rays

  • Smoking

  • Facial Expressions

Also, the body develops antibodies to it that reduce its effectiveness, which results in the necessity of stronger doses or more frequent treatments.

Types of wrinkles, which can be cured by Botox treatment.

Frown Wrinkles:

Frown Wrinkles is seen in persons with excessive sun exposure and those who have over activity of these muscles often associated with frowning.Frown wrinkles are the vertical lines and can signal emotions such as anger, anxiety or fear and this can be successfully treated with Botulinum Toxin.

One more function for that gadget occurs when your vehicle is actually thieved. With a tracking device, you are in a position to locate your automobile. For safety functions, tracking devices may also be utilised for monitoring for vehicles or people which are suspicious. A lot more significantly, the GPS guides the consumer even in an unfamiliar location and helps locate the right location. Tracking devices are further designed for other functions too.

Despite the fact that fleet tracking devices and GPS are extremely beneficial to everybody, not all people have adopted to this direction. This really is due to the fact; having a tracking device and also installing might be costly. With regard to company uses, it?s really helpful for it can keep an eye on many autos at once, which goes the exact same for using this for surveillance or tracking a thieved auto. Investing funds for the tracking product ensures you in the protection of one?s automobile. Plus, the GPS system truly assists you keep track of your automobile as well as locate you when you get lost.

Tracking down your automobiles is definitely the principal function of the fleet tracking devices and GPS systems. If you really don?t choose to get it forever, you can take a look for tracking line companies that offer bundles for tracking gadgets. Through it, you simply must pay for set up in addition to their services month-to-month. However, if you?re searching for a long time security and monitoring your company first hand, then it is greater that you simply purchase oneself a tracking gadget. In exchange with spending a bit of cash with it, you?re certain security, especially for the business or perhaps for individual uses.

Extreme weather of last decade part of larger pattern linked to global warming

ScienceDaily (Mar. 25, 2012) ? The past decade has been one of unprecedented weather extremes. Scientists of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany argue that the high incidence of extremes is not merely accidental. From the many single events a pattern emerges. At least for extreme rainfall and heat waves the link with human-caused global warming is clear, the scientists show in a new analysis of scientific evidence in the journal Nature Climate Change. Less clear is the link between warming and storms, despite the observed increase in the intensity of hurricanes.

In 2011 alone, the US was hit by 14 extreme weather events which caused damages exceeding one billion dollars each -- in several states the months of January to October were the wettest ever recorded. Japan also registered record rainfalls, while the Yangtze river basin in China suffered a record drought. Similar record-breaking events occurred also in previous years. In 2010, Western Russia experienced the hottest summer in centuries, while in Pakistan and Australia record-breaking amounts of rain fell. 2003 saw Europe?s hottest summer in at least half a millennium. And in 2002, the weather station of Zinnwald-Georgenfeld measured more rain in one day than ever before recorded anywhere in Germany -- what followed was the worst flooding of the Elbe river for centuries.

A question of probabilities

"The question is whether these weather extremes are coincidental or a result of climate change," says Dim Coumou, lead author of the article. "Global warming can generally not be proven to cause individual extreme events -- but in the sum of events the link to climate change becomes clear." This is what his analysis of data and published studies shows. "It is not a question of yes or no, but a question of probabilities," Coumou explains. The recent high incidence of weather records is no longer normal, he says.

"It?s like a game with loaded dice," says Coumou. "A six can appear every now and then, and you never know when it happens. But now it appears much more often, because we have changed the dice." The past week illustrates this: between March 13th and 19th alone, historical heat records were exceeded in more than a thousand places in North America.

Three pillars: basic physics, statistical analysis and computer simulations

The scientists base their analysis on three pillars: basic physics, statistical analysis and computer simulations. Elementary physical principles already suggest that a warming of the atmosphere leads to more extremes. For example, warm air can hold more moisture until it rains out. Secondly, clear statistical trends can be found in temperature and precipitation data, the scientists explain. And thirdly, detailed computer simulations also confirm the relation between warming and records in both temperature and precipitation.

With warmer ocean temperatures, tropical storms -- called typhoons or hurricanes, depending on the region -- should increase in intensity but not in number, according to the current state of knowledge. In the past decade, several record-breaking storms occurred, for example hurricane Wilma in 2004. But the dependencies are complex and not yet fully understood. The observed strong increase in the intensity of tropical storms in the North Atlantic between 1980 and 2005, for example, could be caused not just by surface warming but by a cooling of the upper atmosphere. Furthermore, there are questions about the precision and reliability of historic storm data.

Overall, cold extremes decrease with global warming, the scientists found. But this does not compensate for the increase in heat extremes.

Climatic warming can turn an extreme event into a record-breaking event

"Single weather extremes are often related to regional processes, like a blocking high pressure system or natural phenomena like El Ni?o," says Stefan Rahmstorf, co-author of the article and chair of the Earth System Analysis department at PIK. "These are complex processes that we are investigating further. But now these processes unfold against the background of climatic warming. That can turn an extreme event into a record-breaking event."

Planets hurtling near the speed of light? It's possible, study says.

Scientists want to know if planets can form near the supermassive black hole at the core of the galaxy. If so, the black hole could fling them out into space at enormous speeds that, from our vantage point, could appear to approach the speed of light.?

Deep in the heart of the Milky Way, where a supermassive black hole lurks, conditions are so chaotic that planets ? and perhaps life ? can't form: Or can they?

A small team of astronomers suggests one way to answer the question, at least as it relates to planets: Monitor the Milky Way's rejects ? stars that the galaxy's central black hole has kicked toward intergalactic space ? for signs of planets.

Such planets ? orbiting a star or traveling alone ? so far are hypothetical. The center of the galaxy is so shrouded in dust that planet-hunting as it's practiced in our galactic neighborhood is futile.

But individual ejected stars, dubbed hypervelocity stars because they are ejected at such great speeds, are anything but hypothetical. The first stellar speedster was reported to be leaving the galaxy in 2005. Since then, the total has grown to at least 16 hypervelocity stars reported.

Hunting for more in the galaxy's halo, where they are most obvious, then monitoring them for the signature of a planet's transit across the star's face, would help settle the question of whether the center of the galaxy is hospitable for planet formation, explains Avi Loeb, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass.

He is one of the co-authors of a paper set for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society in Britain that looks at the ejection mechanism and how one might go about the hunt.

With planet-hunting efforts such as NASA's Kepler mission finding hundreds of confirmed planets, with at least 2,000 candidates waiting in the wings for confirmation, the notion that stars at the galactic center also host planets would seem reasonable.

But several factors could weigh against planet-making there, Dr. Loeb explains.

The broader region around the black hole is a hotbed of star formation. Stars are roughly a million times more densely packed there than the stars in the sun's neighborhood. At the galactic center, the stars that form generally are more massive than the sun, burn hotter, and flit about the galactic center at speeds of more than 2 million miles an hour, compared with roughly half a million miles an hour for the sun.

Under those cramped, turbulent conditions, it would be hard for a star's disk of dust and gas to hang together long enough to allow planets form.

Still some observations hint that planets might form close to the Milky Way's center.

For instance, researchers have noted intriguing flare-like events as material gets heated, compressed, then swallowed via the black hole's extraordinary gravitational tug. Evidence suggests that the material might not be a star but?asteroids ? planetary building blocks.

(AP) ? As Afghanistan seizes more of the political spotlight, the Republican presidential candidates are quick to criticize President Barack Obama's handling of the war but struggle to explain how they would change the strategy they would inherit.

GOP front-runner Mitt Romney says Obama has exhibited "failed leadership" and should not have set a timetable for ending the war. But Romney won't say whether he would scrap the president's plans to bring the war to a close by the end of 2014. Rivals Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich have questioned whether the U.S. should be in Afghanistan at all, but neither has plans for withdrawing tens of thousands of American troops.

The Republican reluctance to outline specific policy positions is evidence of the complex nature of managing the decade-long war as public support dwindles, and concerns that detailed campaign promises could pigeonhole a candidate if he goes on to win the White House.

It's a role reversal for the parties from 2008, when a Republican president was mired in a long and unpopular war and Democratic candidates, including Obama, tried to convince voters that they should take the reins.

But the political calculus for the current crop of Republicans is more complicated than it was for Obama in 2008. Obama opposed the Iraq war from the start and his election-year promise to bring it to an end put him in lockstep with the rest of his party.

This year's GOP candidates, however, find their party's hawkish tendencies butting up against the public's growing impatience with the Afghan war.

Six in 10 Americans see the war as not worth its costs, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released this month. Opposition to the war is bipartisan, and for the first time, the Post-ABC poll showed more Republicans "strongly" see the war as not worth fighting than say the opposite.

Yet many in the GOP have agreed with some of Obama's aggressiveness in Afghanistan, from increasing U.S. troop levels to ordering the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the attacks that drew the U.S. into the war in the first place.

Defense analyst Michael O'Hanlon said those actions have made it harder for Republican to come up with a distinctive and specific alternative war strategy.

"I think it reflects that this is not an issue that is so simple that reflexively turning to a Republican line of attack is going to be the answer," said O'Hanlon, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, a Washington-based think tank.

But the recent series of troubling episodes in Afghanistan, including the accidental burning of Qurans by U.S. forces and the alleged killing of 17 Afghan civilians by an American soldier, have focused fresh attention on how the U.S. plans to get out of Afghanistan and whether a Republican president would pursue a different course than Obama.

The president's withdrawal plan, in coordination with NATO allies and Afghanistan, calls for the U.S. to move into a support role in Afghanistan in 2013 and hand over security responsibility to the Afghans by the end of 2014. The administration is negotiating with Afghanistan about a U.S. presence there after 2014 and is trying to reach a political breakthrough with the Taliban.

Republicans have criticized the 2014 benchmark, saying Obama's decision to put a timetable on withdrawal puts U.S. gains in Afghanistan at risk.

"Why in the world do you go to the people that you're fighting with and tell them the date you're pulling out your troops? It makes absolutely no sense," Romney said in February.

Santorum said it "gave them something which you should never give an enemy, which is hope."

But neither candidate has said whether he would abandon the NATO-backed 2014 withdrawal plan, which would be well under way by the time either took office in January. Nor has either said whether his own war strategy would keep the U.S. fighting in Afghanistan past that date.

Romney, who is on track to win the nomination, has been especially vague about how many U.S. forces he would keep in Afghanistan and for how long. He has both pledged to ensure a "force level necessary to secure our gains and complete our mission successfully" while also promising to bring troops home "as soon as humanly possible."

The former Massachusetts governor says he can't get more specific until he gets guidance from the military, and plans to conduct a full interagency war review upon taking office.

Democrats say Romney's lack of clarity on Afghanistan will be a liability in a general election race against Obama.

"What's clear is that he's lacking a core set of experiences so he gets pulled back and forth between the 'let's double down' strategy and public opinion polls that think that 10 years is enough," said Heather Hurlburt, a foreign policy expert who worked in the Clinton administration and now heads the National Security Network, a progressive organization.

Romney has drawn one clear distinction with the president. He opposes Taliban negotiations and says the U.S. should not hold talks with a group trying to kill American soldiers.

As Romney seeks the right strategy for success in Afghanistan, Santorum and Gingrich have started to question whether there is even a mission in Afghanistan worth completing.

"We have to either make a decision to make a full commitment, which this president has not done, or we have to decide to get out and probably get out sooner" than planned in 2014, Santorum said in a recent interview.

Gingrich has said the U.S. is "risking the lives of young men and women in a mission that may, frankly, not be doable."

Neither candidate, however, has said how those concerns would translate into an actual war strategy or whether he would speed up Obama's withdrawal timetable if elected.

The only Republican contender with a clearly articulated war strategy is Texas Rep. Ron Paul. The Libertarian-leaning Paul long has opposed the war and says he would quickly end the war once in the White House.

Court weighs making health coverage a fact of life

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Death, taxes and now health insurance? Having a medical plan or else paying a fine is about to become another certainty of American life, unless the Supreme Court says no.

People are split over the wisdom of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, but they are nearly united against its requirement that everybody have insurance. The mandate is intensely unpopular even though more than 8 in 10 people in the United States already are covered by workplace plans or government programs such as Medicare. When the insurance obligation kicks in, not even two years from now, most people won't need to worry or buy anything new.

Nonetheless, Americans don't like being told how to spend their money, not even if it would help solve the problem of the nation's more than 50 million uninsured.

Can the government really tell us what to buy?

Federal judges have come down on both sides of the question, leaving it to the Supreme Court to sort out. The justices are allotting an unusually long period, six hours over three days, beginning March 26, to hear arguments challenging the law's constitutionality.

Their ruling, expected in June, is shaping up as a historic moment in the century-long quest by reformers to provide affordable health care for all.

Many critics and supporters alike see the insurance requirement as the linchpin of Obama's health care law: Take away the mandate and the wheels fall off.

Politically it was a wobbly construction from the start. It seems half of Washington has flip-flopped over mandating insurance.

One critic dismissed the idea this way: "If things were that easy, I could mandate everybody to buy a house and that would solve the problem of homelessness." That was Obama as a presidential candidate, who was against health insurance mandates before he was for them.

Once elected, Obama decided a mandate could work as part of a plan that helps keep premiums down and assists those who can't afford them.

To hear Republicans rail against this attack on personal freedom, you'd never know the idea came from them.

Its model was a Massachusetts law signed in 2006 by Mitt Romney, now the front-runner of the Republican presidential race, when he was governor. Another GOP hopeful, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, supported a mandate on individuals as an alternative to President Bill Clinton's health care proposal, which put the burden on employers.

All four GOP presidential candidates now promise to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which they call "Obamacare." Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum calls it "the death knell for freedom."

So much for compromise.

Obama and congressional Democrats pushed the mandate through in 2010, without Republican support, in hopes of creating a fair system that ensures everyone, rich or poor, young or old, can get the health care they need. Other economically advanced countries have done it.

Doing nothing is more expensive than most people realize.

Congress found that when the uninsured go to clinics and emergency rooms, the care they can't pay for costs nearly $75 billion a year. Much of that cost is passed along and ends up adding $1,000 a year to the average family's insurance premium.

The overhaul is neither the liberal dream of a single government program supported by taxes and covering everyone nor the conservative vision of stripping away federal rules and putting free enterprise in charge.

The Obama plan relies on private companies plus lots of regulation to make sure they provide basic benefits, keep premiums reasonable, and cover the sick as well as the healthy. That's where the mandate comes in. If insurers must cover everyone, even those with existing medical conditions, healthy people have little incentive to sign up before they get sick.

Insurance companies argue that if only the sick sign up, insurers will go broke. So the law says everybody must have insurance for themselves and their children, or pay a penalty.

Also, because everyone needs health care sometime, if everyone purchases insurance, the price per person can be lower, with the cost of care spread out over many people.

After all, the government requires workers to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes, whether they want the benefits or not.

One argument for the insurance mandate is that the fines are just federal taxes by another name. Another is that it falls under the government's constitutional power to regulate commerce that crosses state borders.

State governments, of course, tell people to buy lots of things, including auto insurance or motorcycle helmets.

"You can always move to another state," said Tom O'Connor, a consultant in Fairfax, Va., who thinks the health care law overreaches. "It's a little more difficult to move to another country."

Many agree.

In an Associated Press-GfK poll, 85 percent said the U.S. government should not have the power to require people to buy health insurance. When the question is worded without the specific reference to federal power, acceptance of the mandate grows a bit, but 6 in 10 are still against it.

Even among those who generally support the health care overhaul, one-third said they are against the insurance mandate.

There's also a significant minority who sees mandates as a cop-out and prefer a government program that covers everyone, Medicare for all.

It's clear that many people do not understand what the law would do or how it would affect them.

Jan Gonzales, an out-of-work bookkeeper in Pablo, Mont., calls fining people for going without insurance "the most ridiculous, asinine thing you ever heard of."

"If I can't put food on the table for my children, how can I pay for health care coverage?" asks Gonzales, who's been without insurance for seven years. "What moron came up with that idea?"

Of course, she might qualify for the law's exemptions for those too poor to pay and for assistance for low-income people, as well as many in the middle class.

There also are some religious exemptions. .

Estimates vary widely of how many uninsured people will get insurance once it's required in January 2014.

About 4 million people would pay a penalty to the Internal Revenue Service for being uninsured in 2016, the Congressional Budget Office estimates.

By 2016, the fine reaches $695 per uninsured adult or 2.5 percent of family income, up to $12,500 per year. The IRS is in charge of the penalties but can't prosecute violators or place liens against them. Its only enforcement option may be withholding money from refunds.

That leaves insurance companies, who stand to gain lots of new customers, worried that people instead will shrug off the weak mandate.

Meanwhile, the state-federal Medicaid program will expand to cover more low-income people, and that's another issue before the Supreme Court, because many states say they cannot afford the extra cost.

Fix Your House Or Decorate It: Find Out More About Home ...

Have you ever checked out a house and said ?Not enough bathrooms!? and passed on it? Bathrooms are one of the key features in determining property value. Each additional bathroom you add to your home can mean thousands in increased property value.

Keep your carpets clean, it will do a lot for the appearance of your home. High traffic areas of your carpet need special attention to remain clean. Your house will look better and feel brand new again.

An excellent method for improving the safety of your home is to pad sharp furniture. Corner protectors are available for this purpose at any home improvement center, or you can purchase foam tape to cushion corners. You should also secure any lose wiring that could be hazardous to your child.

Paint is the foundation of any room and sets the tone ? start there before planning for other elements. Painting the walls and ceiling of a room can be done far easier if you do it before having new flooring installed. Your flooring could get paint on it, even if you have drop cloths put down.

The result is bent bristles which wear out quicker. Hang it so that the bristles remain straight and will last longer. Mops should also be hung up in a way that allows them to dry thoroughly and avoid mildew.

You might consider an appliance upgrade for your next home improvement project rather than work on the house itself. It is going to be more than worth your while to replace your large appliances.

Research ideas for your home improvement projects before you begin. There are a million different things you can do to your living space if you just look in the right places. Doing this will also help relieve the stress that is caused from having to rush to figure things out.

Rely on your creativity and unique personality to design original projects. While this is a good idea, you should also make sure that each improvement is practical.

If you are looking for a way to save your foundation, do dirt work which will ensure that water flows away from the walls of the house. To keep run off water from damaging your house, create a gradual slope falling away from it, so that water doesn?t accumulate near your foundation. Another good idea is to add an extension to the downspout that carries water from the roof gutters. This will carry the water further from your foundation; again, avoiding water pooling beside your house.

If you decide to hire a contractor to do your home improvement, reputation is far more important than getting the cheapest price. A contractor who charges rock bottom prices and has a terrible reputation is probably going to use shoddy materials and do the work carelessly. Once the job is completed, you will find that it needs to be repaired. You can also have a dangerous situation on top of bad job. Therefore, choose a reliable contractor with plenty of references and no known past issues.

A neighborhood can save on its home improvement costs by setting up a ?community tool chest.? Borrow tools from neighbors who also do home improvement to save money by avoiding buying single-use specialized equipment. Not only that, the two of you can trade tips.

When you are considering a home improvement plan, analyze how much water your household uses. Water-saving shower heads, toilets and water heaters are smart additions to your home. The new fixtures not only add to your property value by being modern and green, but they also will save you big money on your water bill.

Inspect your property to make sure there are no low area, particularly next to the foundation. Low areas on your property should get filled in with compacted soils so that water does not pool here during storms and cause erosion. Water digging away by the foundation can even seep into your house or rot wooden parts of your house.

Stay in balance! Improve the sound in your home! You may need to check the balance on a ceiling fan that is noisy! A lot of times, you can adjust the screws on the fan. This is a good time to clean your fan, especially since dirt and dust can cause balance issues.

Be certain that you protect all surfaces by covering them, no matter what project you are doing. By keeping surfaces from being marred by scratches, flying debris or paint splatters, you can prevent any additional expense that might come from having to clean up or repair them later. You do not want to do damage to other parts of your home with improvement to it!

A washer and dryer combo unit should be considered if space is limited at your home. There are different types and styles of combination washer/dryers, but most types will fit in about the same space as a dishwasher. A combo unit washes the clothes and when done switches to a dryer.

Use a type of bold print in a average or low key living room to add some personality. Try adding leopard or zebra print to your living room in the form of an accessory such as a small area rug, chair cushion, wall art or decorative pillow.

Proper prep can help you to avoid hassle and expense when it comes to home improvement. Now that you have the knowledge you need you can get going on your own project.

As Nuclear Reactors Age, the Money To Close Them Lags

Hell yeah! Nuclear power plants going for cheap. I'll take one! Surplus ICBM silos are interesting, but have far too many drawbacks. But nuclear power plants? Those things are bigger than a city block, above ground, extremely stable, etc. I'd love to buy one.

For starters, I think I'd start cutting up one of the cooling towers, until it looked like a giant medieval castle, just smooth and round instead of 4 stone walls. Re-enactments of Monty Python's & the Holy Grail are, of course, obligatory.

After that, I'd have to buy as much flesh-tone paint as I can afford. It would take some time, but just think of it... https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWxgqeXdSpHH_g4EXzN82O8hYPZKVSwZv7vrE_vcaBfXXaDUpRuIY_12Y0Apu7PrpPRb-bcLpkrmkjdap9n0N8I_PC5fgBs50O1n8aXlloNR9QqM_-FqghISpaYlh_TwHV4hbXo6DiDM0/s1600/san-onofre_songs.jpg [slashdot.org]">Giant nuclear boobies!

As an added bonus, nuclear power plants always need ample water, so you're guaranteed to get a private lake, river, or beachfront property, no matter which one you buy. They're also universally pretty close to mega population centers, so, while it's likely a nice quiet location, you won't be too far from a major city, unlike many of those silos.

'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' pulled from Fox schedule

LOS ANGELES, March 21 (TheWrap.com) - "I Hate My Teenage Daughter" isn't getting a lot of love from Fox.

The network has pulled the comedy from its schedule two weeks earlier than expected after it posted disappointing ratings. Fox said the show would air its six remaining episodes in the summer, including the two that were to air March 27 and April 3.

The series, which stars Jaime Presssly and Katie Finneran as a pair of lifelong friends and single moms who fear that their daughters are growing up to be just like the girls who picked on them in school, ran Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. and was expected to go into hiatus following its April 3 episode to make room for the return of "Glee" on April 10.

"Raising Hope" repeats will fill the slot March 27 and April 3, and "Glee" will return from 8 to 9 the following week, as previously planned.

"Daughter" premiered on November 30, posting a so-so 2.8/7 in the 18-49 demo. This week, it fell 14 percent from its previous airing to a disheartening 1.2 rating/4 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic.

Wildfire LogoThrough the hard-fought battle to represent the world's top brands, social marketing platform Wildfire?has stayed quiet. But today, it revealed to TechCrunch that it has 13,000 paying customers, more than any company in the space, and has grown from 7 to 300 employees since the start of 2010, making it as big as industry giant Buddy Media. It's now ranked in the top 1% on the Glass Door chart of best places to work, and we estimate its 2011 revenues were between $35 and $45 million. While 13,000 customers sounds impressive, many of those are low-paying monthly campaign clients. To shift more to its lucrative full social media marketing suite, Wildfire has just hired a new CMO Doug Laird, formerly of QlikTech, SAP, Siebel, and Oracle.

LIVERMORE, Calif. -- Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) today announced the selection of six industry projects for the advancement of energy technologies using high performance computing (HPC).

Called the "hpc4energy incubator," this pilot program aims to innovate and accelerate the development of energy technology and boost U.S. economic competitiveness in the global marketplace by teaming industry with the scientific and computing resources at national laboratories.

The companies selected are: GE Energy Consulting; Robert Bosch LLC; Potter Drilling Inc.; ISO New England; United Technologies Research Center; and GE Global Research.

These companies will collaborate with LLNL scientists and use LLNL's HPC to find solutions to urgent energy-related problems and learn how to employ HPC as a powerful tool for innovation.

"By bringing together industry's entrepreneurial know-how and the national labs' science and technology, we aim to establish a model for energy technology innovation," said Tomas Diaz de la Rubia, LLNL deputy director for Science & Technology. "Our goal is to boost U.S. economic competitiveness in the global energy market by accelerating the development of new energy technologies.

"The national labs offer access to some of the world's most powerful supercomputers as well as the multidisciplinary expertise required to apply HPC to the development of innovative solutions to the country's energy challenges," added Diaz de la Rubia, who announced the pilot program last year at a Technology Leadership and Strategy Initiative (TLSI) workshop, sponsored by the U.S. Council on Competitiveness and hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in Washington D.C.

The hpc4energy incubator emerged from the National Summit on Advancing Clean Energy Technologies held in Washington D.C. in May, 2011, sponsored by the Howard Baker Forum, the Bipartisan Policy Center, LLNL, and other partners who focused on exploring how HPC can catalyze rapid advancement of U.S. clean energy technologies. This program also addresses the needs and benefits identified earlier in studies by the Council on Competitiveness in strengthening the U.S. manufacturing sector and competitiveness as a whole. The studies identified HPC as a key competitive advantage for the U.S. and underscored the importance of removing the barriers inhibiting industry's adoption of HPC.

The projects will be managed by LLNL's High Performance Computing Innovation Center, which is dedicated to partnering with American industry to apply HPC to the innovation of new technologies. http://www.hpcinnovationcenter.llnl.gov/ The HPCIC is located in LLNL's open campus, an open research and development area for collaboration with industry, academia and other government agencies.
