M@h*(pOet)?ica

#StorySaturday is a Guest Blog weekend experiment in which we invite people to write about science in a different, unusual format ? fiction, science fiction, lablit, personal story, fable, fairy tale, poetry, or comic strip. We hope you like it.

=========================

Welcome to the first installment of my?M@h*(pOet)?ica Blog.? I chose its title to give fair warning of the kind of . . . unusual material it will be concerned with, to wit: poetry whose mathematical elements are as important as its verbal elements, as in the following:

It?s from a series of ten equations its author, Scott Helmes, calls ?Non-additive Postulations,? which first appeared in Ernest Robson and Jet Wimp?s anthology, Against Infinity (Primary Press, 1979).? Later I will attempt to show that it makes sense.? Sort of.? For now I leave it for those courageous enough to stick with me as something to reflect upon.? Suggested topics of reflection: how is it poetry?? How is it mathematics?? Why should anyone bother with it, regardless of what it is?

Now for something of mine?since I?m too self-infatuated to let any chance for self-promotion to get past me without my taking full advantage of it. It?s ?The Best Investigations,? an offshoot of my on-going series of long divisions of ?poetry.?? I would defend its presence on the grounds that, as an example of the level of my immersion in mathematical poetry as a poet, ?it should provide a good idea of my qualifications to write about such poetry (or lack thereof). ?It also should reveal the range of matter such poetry can contain, such as symbols from music, and stolen images from canonical painters like Paul Klee and photographs from the Hubble?to the despair of some in the academy, I fear. ?(Note how I get back at them in this poem, though!)

My next specimen of the kind of poems my blog will mostly be about is another long division of mine, ?Mathemaku No. 4A, Original Version?:

I generally use this, my very first long division poem, in lectures on mathematical poetry as what I hope is an easy-to-follow introduction to it.? My friend Betsy Franco was inspired by it to make a bunch of most excellent poems like it for children, with illustrations by Steven Salerno, such as the following:

These are from Betsy?s Mathematickles (Simon & Schuster, 2003).

Then there?s this, by Karl Kempton, the arithmetic of which could not be more simple (look for the arrow near the bottom), but the full poetic complexity of could not be greater:

To finish off my little survey, here are three more I hope will indicate the variety of the poetry this blog will treat.? The first is by Charlotte Baldridge, the second by Robert Stodola (both from Against Infinity), and the third by Kaz Maslanka:

Okay, now for a little more about me?about me and mathematical poetry, that is.? In elementary school I was early tabbed ?gifted,? meaning I was academically one in a hundred.? At the time, the population of the United States was only around 150,000,000, so that meant only a million-and-a-half others were as smart (according to the tests) as I.? But I did seem quicker to pick up arithmetic than my classmates, and even got enough interested in algebra in junior high to read ahead in my textbook?until other interests intervened.? When I got to high school, Sputnik had the country?s leaders worried about our technological lead, so those considered gifted, like I, were bombarded with propaganda about the value of a career in science.? Hence, I, and most of my friends, immediately opted for careers in the arts or humanities.

Alarmingly non-conformist, I went further, turning my back on college with the intention of becoming a self-taught Famous Writer, like Bernard Shaw, Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare.? I never made it.? Eventually, paid to go to college by the GI Bill and able to go free in California, where I?d been living long enough to qualify as a Californian, I broke my vow never to go to college.? I went full-time to Valley Junior College in the San Fernando Valley for five years, even after I?d used up my GI Bill aid.

I?d always enjoyed math, and had read a few books about it for layman, one of which got me trying to overturn Georg Cantor?s different-sized infinities; it took me several years to finally concede that I couldn?t.? (At one point I even wrote Isaac Asimov about it; he wrote a postcard back saying it wasn?t an area of expertise for him, so he could not deal with whatever ?refutation? of Cantor I sent him.)? I tried to disprove the non-Euclidean geometries, too, taking a long time to allow that I could not.? I won?t say anything about my adventures with modern physics?except that I came to be a passionate advocate of the value of all the sciences in spite of what the Sputnik hysteria did to me.

Meanwhile, I remained active as a creative writer, getting just about nowhere in all genres.? My work was quite conventional except for the haiku I wrote influenced by the typographic techniques of E. E. Cummings.? I got nothing published but some conventional haiku that I also wrote.? The haiku and Cummings.? Those two things were the key to my involvement with mathematical poetry.? The haiku because it is the kind of poetry that comes closest to mathematics.? I say that because it is supposed to be maximally objective, with a minimum of words, the best of them tending to be almost as condensed and elegant as an effective equation.

As for the poetry of Cummings, its visual elements, as in the famous one from his Tulip and Chimneys (1923), portraying Buffalo Bill,

BuffaloBill-Excerpt

Buffalo Bill

were the first important step in the evolution of poetry of words only to concrete poetry, which was the first variety of? what I call ?plurexpressive poetry? for poetry that is significantly aesthetically expressive in more than one expressive modality (or ?plurally expressive?), in this case the expressive language of words and the expressive language of graphics.? A half century or so later we had many such mixed kinds of poetry, including mathematical poetry . . . and visiomathematical poetry, which employs three expressive modalities, some examples of which I?ve shown here.

Next up, if enough are interested, my examinations of various mathematical poems, including the ones on display here, and my attempts to answer the questions I earlier suggested as topics of reflection.? Stay tuned.

Protesters target NE Ga. animal shelter over deaths

CLAYTON - Protesters want the board of directors to resign from a northeast Georgia animal shelter that promised not to kill pets but is accused of euthanizing several of them.

The protesters collected signatures on a petition in Clayton Saturday calling for the resignation of the board of directors overseeing the Boggs Mountain Humane Shelter in Tiger. The shelter's former director has been fired and its board chairwoman has resigned.

Fox 5 Atlanta recently reported that the shelter ran a so-called "Luck Dog and Cat" program. By paying at least $100, animal lovers or people giving up pets could sponsor animals at the no-kill shelter. The money was supposed to cover veterinary treatments, making it easier for others to adopt those pets.

But documents show some of the pets were put down.

Weight Control Can Cut Women's Diabetes Risk, Study Shows

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Weight control through diet and exercise can prevent most cases of type 2 diabetes in American women over age 50, a new study finds.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass., analyzed data from more than 150,000 postmenopausal women who were followed for more than 10 years. Hispanics and Asians were about twice as likely as whites to develop diabetes; blacks were two to three times as likely.

Those differences were largely due to modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity and smoking, the researchers said.

The study also found that a large reduction in diabetes risk among women would occur in all four racial and ethnic groups if they maintained a healthy body weight, ate a healthy diet and were physically active.

Maintaining a body-mass index (BMI) of less than 25 appeared to be particularly important in reducing diabetes risk. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

"Our work shows that among numerous races [and] ethnicities, the women with both high body-mass index and low levels of physical activity are far more likely to develop diabetes," primary investigator Dr. Yunsheng Ma said in a medical school news release. "A healthier diet and adequate levels of physical activity significantly lower that risk for most women."

The study was published July 23 in the journal Diabetes Care.

Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, means the body doesn't produce or properly use the hormone insulin, which is needed to convert food into energy. Untreated, type 2 diabetes can cause damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys and other organs.

Man stops alleged iPhone thief, makes a video

By Marc Santia, WNBC

David Gray / REUTERS

Brian Hester was taking a smoke break on Barclay Street when he witnessed a man steal an iPhone straight out of a woman's hands Thursday.

Hester, a real estate broker and avid photographer, wasn't going to just stand by and do nothing, so he gave chase.

"All I was thinking was, 'Catch this guy,'" Hester said Friday.

Joined by other New Yorkers, Hester and the band of strangers caught up to the alleged thief on Broadway. They held him on the ground and Hester began taking video with his camera.

As they waited for police, the alleged thief decided to make a run for it, but Hester wasn't about to let him get away. He chased the man a second time and tackled the alleged crook right in the middle of Broadway.

Police came and arrested the man and the band of good Samaritans returned the iPhone to its owner.

Throughout the ordeal Hester continued to shoot video with his camera. He hopes that the video he took will serve as a warning to potential thiefs.

"I wanted to put the video out there to show anybody else who's thinking of coming to New York and snatching somebody's iPhone that you're not going to get away with that," said Hester.

Best Banners Recommendations - Internet Articles, News and ...

gifs On line ad banners, they can be the billboards on the Net ( space ) a new foundation so that you can promote your goods and services to the internet planet. The thing is all of them everwhere.

gifs When you are deciding how to shell out internet advertising spending budget, just about the most essential questions you have to take into account is the thing that kind of selling ads online you want to purchase. Banners has become the older kind of promotion even so, outside the numerous strategies used by online promotion, banners is often a major a person using Paid advertising.. The reason? Properly basic it has the because the adjustments in the Google Criteria.

gifs The size and site involving websites may differ in line with the internet site that it is advertising.

Iam going to share to you recommendations and strategies that needs to be considered even though implementing on line banner ad ads, in order that obtain the most may acquired as a result of all of them.

Try to keep your small business start 24 hours a day to help you become bringing in gross sales plus qualified prospects for your small business all the while you are sleeping. By means of setting adverts inside the perfect places your enterprise might be operating on autopilot Seven days a week 24 hours a day.

Below are a few superb advice for selecting the ideal measurements, location, and even more in your websites.

1. Potential audience

To start banners, first thing you have to do is pick the customers, the people you want to market to. When you are developing your marketing campaign, it is very important take into consideration who definitely are viewing the banner ad advertising campaign. If you sell Lady's Outfits, you then absolutely won't would like your banner ad advertising campaign being thought of about the internet websites promoting different automobile pieces.

Two. Models

An efficient Advertising layout often becomes a lot more clicks. Great and bad the banner ad will depend on it has the design, colorings plus movement. Prior to buying the banner ad measurements, uncover what dimensions are satisfactory in the exact location in which you need to show your internet Banner Ad.

Either layout your individual Advertising or even delegate the item. Begin to make these lovely little animated gif documents. Locate the photo, measurements the item, plus visit in internet marketing, it is that easy in case you damage, you can return back and proper, there's nothing saved soon you need to. You can find layout services by only $20, according to the sized the ad banners that is certainly...

A few.Dimension Things:

Via my personal experience a new wider size over the top is frequently most effective. The advisable Advertising i would probably me is 480x60. You will find there's belief that it can be always been one of the most popular over the top measurements. But you can get how the conventional 336x280 is very effective on most sites, but it would possibly not suit design on the web site you decide on. Other huge styles like 300x250 or even 160x600 (huge skyscraper) operate wonderfully in many layouts.

Several. Acquire Process

Therefore you find out have the banner ad ready for advertising..although generally there just so lots of location & location choices..what design is best a person, as well as the best selling price?

Banners is usually deeply in love with CPM groundwork or even Cpa marketing. CPM is Price tag Each impression, meaning whenever the over the top seems while in the web site you have to pay every impression, My partner and i might not recommend this one, much more can be really expensive. Cpa marketing is Cost every order, this is not much currently available days to weeks, however it is the best collection of marketers because the creator exclusively gets paid each time a lead or even sale is manufactured from a new click-through.

Eventually there is also a Monthly Rate. I always endorse, in which in the early stages you keep to Cpa marketing or even Montly Fee. The reason? Well this will let you do a bit of tests, therefore you arrive at regulate it as opposed to using CPM you basically might be obtaining even so lots of impressions the advert is often sent to this web page and since My partner and i reported, this will receive often be extremely expensive. However if you would like leads to bring customers in your internet site, go for Cost per click or possibly a Cpa marketing technique.

Several. Very best Place and site

The placement of this websites on a website is a very important factor to wedding plus click-throughs. And so..Where is the ideal location for any over the top using a web page? While you might need to research a couple of best places in your websites, although harm place i think would probably be smart. Placing the adverts in the middle on the web site and those that will be above the fold be more responsible than those beneath. Anyplace at the top of the web page could work best. Yet in which on the whole above the fold and the left look like the warmer places. Anyplace below the fold, My partner and i might not recommend, is less attractive because the web site will certainly insert the over the top squandering your the idea, but it might never be observed.

Barclays faces new probe, more U.S. Libor lawsuits

LONDON (Reuters) - Barclays Plc faces a new regulatory probe and more U.S. lawsuits, events that could make it harder for the British lender to repair the damage to its reputation caused by its role in the interest-rate rigging scandal rocking banks.

Barclays said on Friday that Britain's financial regulator has started an investigation involving the bank and four current and former senior employees, including finance director Chris Lucas.

The Financial Services Authority is investigating whether the bank made sufficient disclosures about the fees it paid under commercial agreements related to its capital raisings in June and November 2008. The bank said it is satisfied with its disclosures, but refused further comment.

It also faces more U.S. lawsuits after a record 290 million pound ($455.3 million) fine last month for rigging the Libor interest rate benchmark, sparking fierce criticism about its culture and risk-taking.

More than a dozen other banks are expected to be drawn into the global Libor investigation and could also be fined.

"We are sorry for the issues that have emerged over recent weeks and recognize that we have disappointed our customers and shareholders," Chairman Marcus Agius said on Friday.

"I am confident we can, and will, repair the reputational damage done to our business in their eyes and those of all our stakeholders," Agius said, reaffirming a commitment to deliver a return on equity of 13 percent.

The bank beat forecasts with a profit of more than 4 billion pounds ($6.3 billion) and said there has been no exodus of clients and its performance during July has been ahead of last year.

Barclays shares were up 4.4 percent to 160.4 pence by 0839 GMT, outpacing a 0.4 percent rise by the European bank index <.sx7p>.

Barclays is searching for a new chief executive and chairman after they quit following the Libor scandal.

Agius said the board was focused on filling those positions, but gave no update on likely timing. Investors are keen for one or both of the CEO or chairman to come from outside, to be able to implement a far-reaching overhaul.

Former J.P. Morgan banker Bill Winters is favorite to be CEO and former UK Cabinet Secretary Gus O'Donnell is front-runner for chairman, according to industry sources and UK media reports.

An inquiry by UK lawmakers into the Libor scandal showed that Britain's financial regulator had warned Barclays four months earlier that its culture was too aggressive and must change.

It exposed a strained relationship with regulators, and as the backlash built, the Bank of England effectively forced Bob Diamond to resign as chief executive.

Agius, a Cambridge- and Harvard-educated pillar of London banking who has been criticized for not reining in Diamond, has taken on executive duties but will leave when a successor is found.

MORE LAWSUITS

Barclays had already been named as a defendant in class action lawsuits in U.S. federal courts for its role as a contributor to the U.S. dollar Libor panel. Another class action was filed for its roles on Japanese Yen Libor panels.

A new class action was started on July 6 against Barclays and other Euribor panel banks alleging manipulation, and the bank and a current and former director have been named as defendants in a pending class action for its role as a Libor contributor and alleging mis-statements in past annual reports.

The threat of litigation is a concern to investors, who are keen to see what Barclays is doing to rebuild its brand and restore shareholders' confidence.

The bank reported an underlying pretax profit of 4.2 billion pounds ($6.6 billion) for the six months to the end of June, above an average forecast of 3.8 billion pounds from analysts polled by the company and up 13 percent from a year ago.

It said it faces a bill of 450 million pounds to pay compensation to customers misled about interest-rate hedging products to small businesses. The figure is based on initial estimates and Barclays said the ultimate cost is uncertain.

UK banks agreed last month to pay compensation to customers who were misled about the products.

Barclays' investment bank fared better than most rivals in a tough second quarter, with income of 3 billion pounds up 5 percent from a year ago and down 12 percent on the first quarter.

Barclays is reviewing all parts of its investment bank, people familiar with the matter said, and the Libor scandal has intensified calls for it to shrink the business.

It has admitted its culture needs to change and has picked veteran lawyer Anthony Salz to lead a review of practices, expected to be completed before May 2013.

Barclays said its statutory profit fell 71 percent to 759 million pounds including the fine, interest rate mis-selling charge and movement in the value of its own debt.

Originated contract sales of vacation ownership intervals and numbers of contracts decreased 5.0% and 1.8%, respectively, primarily due to lower closing efficiency partially offset by increased tour flow. The average price per vacation ownership unit sold decreased 2.6% to approximately $14,400, driven by inventory mix.

The Company believes that EBITDA is a useful measure of the Company?s operating performance due to the significance of the Company?s long-lived assets and level of indebtedness. EBITDA is a commonly used measure of performance in its industry which, when considered with GAAP measures, the Company believes gives a more complete understanding of the Company?s operating performance. It also facilitates comparisons between the Company and its competitors. The Company?s management has historically adjusted EBITDA (i.e., ?Adjusted EBITDA?) when evaluating operating performance for the Company, as well as for individual properties or groups of properties, because the Company believes that the inclusion or exclusion of certain recurring and non-recurring items, such as restructuring, goodwill impairment and other special charges and gains and losses on asset dispositions and impairments, is necessary to provide the most accurate measure of core operating results and as a means to evaluate comparative results. The Company?s management also uses Adjusted EBITDA as a measure in determining the value of acquisitions and dispositions and it is used in the annual budget process. The Company has historically reported this measure to its investors and believes that the continued inclusion of Adjusted EBITDA provides consistency in its financial reporting and enables investors to perform more meaningful comparisons of past, present and future operating results and provides a means to evaluate the results of its core on-going operations. EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA are not intended to represent cash flow from operations as defined by GAAP and such metrics should not be considered as an alternative to net income, cash flow from operations or any other performance measure prescribed by GAAP. The Company?s calculation of EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA may be different from the calculations used by other companies and, therefore, comparability may be limited.

All references to Same-Store Owned Hotels reflect the Company?s owned, leased and consolidated joint venture hotels, excluding condo hotels, hotels sold to date and hotels undergoing significant repositionings or for which comparable results are not available (i.e., hotels not owned during the entire periods presented or closed due to seasonality or natural disasters). References to Company-Operated Hotel metrics (e.g. REVPAR) reflect metrics for the Company?s owned, leased and managed hotels. References to Systemwide metrics (e.g. REVPAR) reflect metrics for the Company?s owned, managed and franchised hotels. REVPAR is defined as revenue per available room. ADR is defined as average daily rate.

All references to revenues in constant dollars represent revenues, excluding the impact of the movement of foreign exchange rates. The Company calculates revenues in constant dollars by calculating revenues for the current year using the prior year?s exchange rates. The Company uses this revenue measure to better understand the underlying results and trends of the business, excluding the impact of movements in foreign exchange rates.

All references to contract sales or originated sales reflect vacation ownership sales before revenue adjustments for percentage of completion accounting methodology. All references to earnings from vacation ownership and residential represents operating income before depreciation expense.

All references to management and franchise revenues represent base and incentive fees, franchise fees, amortization of deferred gains resulting from the sales of hotels subject to long-term management contracts and termination fees.

Many dangerous drugs still legal despite 'bath salts' ban ? Health ...

WASHINGTON ? People are inventing so many new, legal ways to get high that lawmakers can?t seem to keep up.

Over the past two years, the U.S. has seen a surge in the use of synthetic drugs made of legal chemicals that mimic the dangerous effects of cocaine, amphetamines and other illegal stimulants.

The drugs are often sold at small, independent stores in misleading packaging that suggests common household items like bath salts, incense and plant food. But the substances inside are powerful, mind-altering drugs that have been linked to bizarre and violent behavior across the country. Law enforcement officials refer to the drugs collectively as ?bath salts,? though they have nothing in common with the fragrant toiletries used to moisturize skin.

President Barack Obama signed a bill into law earlier this month that bans the sale, production and possession of more than two dozen of the most common bath salt drugs. But health professionals say that there are so many different varieties of the drugs that U.S. lawmakers are merely playing catch up.

?The moment you start to regulate one of them, they?ll come out with a variant that sometimes is even more potent,? said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

There are no back alleys or crack houses in America?s latest drug epidemic. The problem involves potent substances that amateur chemists make, package and sell in stores under brands like ?Ivory Wave,? ?Vanilla Sky? and ?Bliss? for as little as $15. Emergencies related to the drugs have surged: The American Association of Poison Control Centers received more than 6,100 calls about bath salt drugs in 2011 ? up from just 304 the year before ? and more than 1,700 calls in the first half of 2012.

The problem for lawmakers is that it?s difficult to crack down on the drugs. U.S. laws prohibit the sale or possession of all substances that mimic illegal drugs, but only if federal prosecutors can show that they are intended for human use. People who make bath salts and similar drugs work around this by printing ?not for human consumption? on virtually every packet.

Barbara Carreno, a spokeswoman for the Drug Enforcement Agency, said the intended use for bath salts is clear.

?Everyone knows these are drugs to get high, including the sellers,? she said.

Many states have banned some of the most common bath salts, which are typically sold by small businesses like convenience stores, tobacco shops and adult book stores. For instance, West Virginia legislators banned the bath salt drug MDPV last year, making it a misdemeanor to sell, buy or possess the synthetic drug. Conviction means up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Stephanie Mitchell, assistant manager of The Den, a tobacco and paraphernalia shop in Morgantown, W.Va., said the store hasn?t sold bath salts in the six months that she?s worked there. But strung-out users still come in and ask for them.

?They?re pretty ? cracked out, I guess would be a good word,? said Mitchell, 21, a student at West Virginia University. ?They?re just kind of not all there. They?re kind of sketchy people.?

Mitchell says she wouldn?t sell bath salts even if she had them, ?because it?s horrible, and I could get in trouble for it.?

Despite the bans, bath salts producers are constantly tweaking their recipes to come up with new drugs that aren?t covered by local laws. In fact, Mark Ryan, director of the Louisiana Poison Center, says there are so many different drugs out there that it?s almost impossible to know what people have ingested, or how long the effects will last.

?Cocaine is cocaine and meth is meth. We know what these things do,? he said. ?But with these new drugs, every time the chemist alters the chemical structure, all bets are off.?

THE SPREAD

The most common bath salt drugs, like MDPV and mephedrone, were first developed in pharmaceutical research laboratories, though they were never approved for medical use. During the last decade they became popular as party drugs at European raves and dance clubs. As law enforcement began cracking down on the problem there, the drugs spread across the Atlantic Ocean.

Poison control centers in the U.S. began tracking use of the drugs in 2010. The majority of the early reports of drug use were clustered in southern states like Louisiana, Tennessee and Kentucky. But the problem soon spread across the country.

The financial lure for small-time drugmakers is enticing. The drugs can be cheaply imported from China or India, and then easily packaged under local brands. For example, bath salts sold in Louisiana carry regional names like Hurricane Charlie or Bayou.

The widespread availability of the drugs in stores is equally alluring for drug users: they can get a cheap high similar to that of illegal drugs by walking to a corner store.

The most dangerous synthetic drugs are stimulants that affect levels of both dopamine and serotonin, brain chemicals that affect mood and perception. Users, who typically smoke or snort the powder-based drugs, may experience a surge in energy, fever and delusions of invincibility.

Use of these drugs has spread across the country with reports stretching from Maine to California. There are no official federal estimates on deaths connected with the drugs, many of which do not show up on typical drug tests. But police reports have implicated the drugs in several cases.

Packets of ?Lady Bubbles? bath salts, for instance, were found on Sgt. David Franklyn Stewart last April after the solider shot and killed his wife and himself during a car chase with law enforcement near Olympia, Wash.

The chase began when Stewart sped past a police patrol car at 6 a.m. The police trooper pursued for 10 miles and reported seeing the driver raise a hand to his head, then heard a shot and saw the driver slump over. The next day police found the couple?s 5-year-old son dead in their home; he had been suffocated with a plastic bag at least 24 hours earlier.

Another death involving bath salts played out in Covington, La. Police reported that Dickie Sanders, 21, shot himself in the head Nov. 11, 2010 while his parents were asleep.

His father, Dr. Richard Sanders, said his son had snorted ?Cloud 9? bath salts and endured three days of intermittent delirium, at one point attempting to cut his own throat. As he continued to have visions, his physician father tried to calm him. But the elder Sanders said that as he slept, his son went into another room and shot himself.

WHAT?S AHEAD

Hospital emergency rooms, doctors and law enforcement agencies across the country have struggled to control bath salt drug users who often are feverish and paranoid that they are being attacked. Doctors say users often turn up naked because bath salts raise their body temperature so much that they strip off their clothing.

Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Tennessee has treated 160 people suspected of taking bath salts since 2010. Dr. Sullivan Smith, who works there, said people on the drugs become combative, and it can take four or five health professionals to subdue them. In some cases, he said, doctors have to use prescription sedatives that are typically reserved for surgery.

Smith recalls one man who had been running for more than 24 hours because he believed the devil was chasing him with an ax. By the time police brought him to the hospital, he was dehydrated and covered in blood from running through thorny underbrush.

?We?re seeing extreme agitation, hallucinations that are very vivid, paranoia and some really violent behavior, so it?s a real crisis for us,? Smith said. ?We sedate the living daylights out of them. And we?re talking doses on the order of 10 or 20 times what you would give for a painful procedure.?

To control the spread of the problem, the Drug Enforcement Agency issued a temporary ban in October on three of the most common drugs ? mephedrone, methylone and MDPV. That ban became permanent under the bill signed by Obama on July 10.

Under the law, anyone convicted of selling, making or possessing 28 synthetic drugs, including bath salts, will face penalties similar to those for dealing traditional drugs like cocaine and heroin.

Those on the front lines say the legislation is a good start. But they don?t expect new laws to dramatically curb use of bath salts in the near term.

?The problem is these drugs are changing and I?m sure they?re going to find some that are a little bit different chemically so they don?t fall under the law,? said Dr. Smith, the Tennessee doctor. ?Is it adequate to name five or 10 or even 20? The answer is no, they?re changing too fast.?
