How to add new rows on a Google Docs spreadsheet?

Usually, in desktop version of Google Docs spreadsheet, I will enter a number of new rows if current document has no rows remaining, so I can extend down the document. I installed Google Drive on my Gingerbread and has a spreadsheet file in it. When I open it, I want to do so with my Android app but how can I do it? Which button should I press?

S&P 500 hits five-year high, extends rally

(AP) ? The Standard and Poor's 500 edged up to a five-year high Friday, extending a rally that started in January.

The S&P 500 rose 8.54 points to 1,517.93, closing 0.3 percent up for the week. The index is at its highest since November 2007 and has advanced for six weeks, the longest streak of gains since August.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 48.92 points, or 0.4 percent, to 13,992.97. The Nasdaq composite climbed 28.74 points, or 0.9 percent, to finish the week at 3,193.87.

The Dow had its best January in almost two decades, and closed above 14,000 on Feb. 1 for the first time since 2007. The index is up 6.8 percent so far this year; the S&P 500 is up 6.4 percent.

A last-minute budget deal in Washington to avoid the "fiscal cliff" of tax hikes and spending cuts helped powered the rally, as did as optimism about the housing sector and gradual improvements in the jobs market.

The S&P 500 finished the week higher despite logging its biggest daily decline in almost three months Monday following worrying news from Europe.

The index fell 1.2 percent that day as bond yields in Spain and Italy rose on concern that the region's politicians will drag Europe back into crisis. European Central Bank President Mario Draghi's cautious comments about the region's economy also weighed on markets Thursday.

"Everybody seems to be saying this market needs to correct," said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners. "Nobody wants to be in it, but nobody wants to be out of it."

Largely positive corporate earnings reports and a report that showed that the U.S. trade deficit narrowed sharply in December provided more fuel for the market's advance Friday.

The trade deficit fell nearly 21 percent in December from November to $38.6 billion, the smallest in nearly three years, as exports rose while oil imports plummeted. The smaller trade gap means the economy likely performed better in the final three months of last year than first reported last week.

"The trade balance was surprisingly very good," said Phil Orlando, chief market strategist at Federated Investors.

The government estimated that the U.S. economy contracted at an annual rate of 0.1 percent in the last three months of 2012. Orlando estimates that may now be revised to growth of 0.5 percent.

Shares of LinkedIn, the online professional networking service, jumped $26.39, or 21.3 percent, to $150.40 after the company reported fourth-quarter results late Thursday that beat analysts' forecasts. AOL soared $2.31 to $33.72 after the Internet company said its quarterly revenue grew for the first time in eight years, helped by strength in worldwide advertising.

Currently, analysts are expecting earnings for the fourth quarter of 2012 to rise 6.5 percent for S&P 500 companies, according to data from S&P Capital I&Q. That's an increase from the 2.4 percent growth rate recorded for the preceding quarter.

Stocks have benefited as investors poured a net $4.1 billion into stock mutual funds since the start of the year, according to data provided by Lipper.

"I'm very encouraged by the fact, that finally, for the first time in many years, individual investors seem to be participating in this," said David Kelly, chief global strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds.

The yield on the 10-year note, which moves inversely to its price, fell one basis point to 1.95 percent.

Trading volume was light as Wall Street braced for what is forecast to be the largest winter storm in more than a year. Up to 2 feet of snow forecast along the densely populated Interstate 95 corridor from the New York City area to Boston and beyond.

Among other stocks making big moves;

? Microchip Technology, a semiconductor maker, jumped $2.45, or 7.2 percent, to $36.39 after its earnings beat estimates. The company said it was seeing "exceptionally strong" bookings.

? Moody's slumped $3.62, or 7.7 percent, to $43.37 even after reporting that fourth-quarter net income jumped 66 percent and revenue blew away expectations. Many are expecting the ratings agency will be the next target of the Justice Department, which filed a suit against rival Standard & Poor's for its actions before the housing market collapse.

? Activision Blizzard, which makes "Call of Duty" and other video games, rose $1.35, or 11.2 percent, to $13.41. The company posted sharply higher earnings and revenue in the fourth quarter, surpassing Wall Street's expectations.

Israel Kirzner and the Invisible Hand

10 Feb 2013

Von Pepe sent me this nice video of Israel Kirzner accepting an award (posted at Coordination Problem):

As Kirzner explains, even though he of course understands the scientific study of ?spontaneous order,? nonetheless he sees the hand of God behind events.

This is yet another example of how atheists and theists can look at the same phenomenon, and walk away with opposite conclusions. Kirzner, Gene Callahan, Tom Woods, and I all have different views of God, but we all believe He exists and are awestruck at His genius in designing a social order where the natural depravity of man can be turned unwittingly into showering goodness on others. This obviously fits right in not just with Christianity, but also with Judaism; see for example Joseph?s reassurance to his brothers.

Yet I know atheists draw the opposite conclusion. Indeed, I?ve had them openly ask me things like, ?Bob, you can see in your study of economics that there can be order without a designer. So why can?t you just accept that the universe has no grand purpose? It just happened.?

Palm oil casualty? 14 pygmy elephants fall prey to pesticides in Borneo

Malaysian wildlife officials say 14 dead pygmy elephants were found last month in Borneo, apparently poisoned by chemicals used by farmers on the country's massive palm-oil plantations.

A rare breed of elephant appears to be the latest casualty of the palm oil boom that is sweeping Malaysian Borneo, reigniting an already heated debate over the pros and cons of the world?s cheapest cooking oil.?

Malaysian wildlife officials say 14 dead pygmy elephants were found last month in the wilds of Sabah Province, apparently poisoned by chemicals used by farmers to keep pests from eating the palm fruit grown on plantations that blanket vast swaths of the countryside.

In once instance, a 3-month old baby elephant was photographed nuzzling its mother, who lay on the ground next to three other corpses. For activists, the image is emblematic of nature?s losing battle with man in and around the farms.

Favored in developing countries for its versatility and long shelf life, palm oil is now found in more than half of processed foods in Western supermarkets, from cosmetics to Girl Scout cookies. Surging global demand has generated billions in profits for Indonesia and Malaysia, the world?s first- and second-largest producers, bringing prosperity to once poor corners.

The boom is changing the complexion of Borneo, the resource-rich island they share that is one home to one of the oldest rainforests on earth. But environmental groups say the palm oil boom is driving the expansion of plantations deeper into hyper-diverse tracts of forest, accelerating global warming and forcing rare species like the?pygmy elephant and orangutan into deadly confrontations with humans.

In a statement following the elephant report, Dionysius S.K. Sharma, executive director of World Wildlife Fund-Malaysia, said the ?central forest landscape in Sabah needs to be protected totally from conversions? and called for "frequent and large-scale patrolling" of forests to protect elephants. Yet he conceded this would be a "massive task" given the remoteness of the terrain and large areas involved.?

The scale of the plantations is massive. Take a flight from Kota Kinabalu, the provincial capital, to Lahad Datu, also known as ?Palm City,? and permaculture reigns: Palm plantations sprawl for miles on end, occasionally pocked with the smokestacks of large processing facilities. The largest are owned by agribusiness giants like Sime Darby and Wilmar International, with clients that include top consumer goods companies Unilever and Nestle.

Business booming

Thanks in part to new US laws mandating the removal of oils rich in trans-fats, business has never been better.

In 2011, the export of palm oil and palm-based products netted the Malaysian economy $27 billion, a fivefold increase over the past decade. With such profits at hand, the Malaysian government wants to double the area under cultivation by 2020.

This is welcome news to longtime residents of Lahad Datu, the coastal?town that has been transformed in years from a crime-ridden backwater to an investment-friendly hub. Real estate prices are soaring, investors are pouring in and the streets are safer than ever, replete with fast-food franchises and shiny hotels. ??This place is opening up, finally,? says Arnan Angkut, at a bustling seaside teashop. ?We are doing much better than before because of palm oil.?

But this kind of enthusiasm could spell long-term trouble for communities in the region and beyond.

A joint study published in October by Stanford and Yale universities revealed that land-clearing operations for plantations in Borneo have emitted more than 140 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2010 alone, equal to annual emissions from about 28 million vehicles. Over the past two decades, about 6,200 sq. mi. of primary and logged forested land have been destroyed in Borneo.

Orangutan populations reduced by half

Activists say that palm oil deforestation and hunting have already combined to reduce Bornean orangutan populations to half the total of the 1980s. At this rate, some predict the iconic animal could be extinct within years.

For its part, the pygmy elephant, a rare sub-species of the African elephant, is in even greater peril: WWF-Malaysia estimates there are about 1,200 left in the wild. And Malaysian wildlife authorities have said they expect to find more dead elephants as they comb the jungle.

New York City Snowstorm Reduces Ranks at Food Pantry

Once a month when St. Francis Xavier church near Manhattan's Union Square opens its food pantry in the basement, Mercedes Cruz takes a number and lines up outside with her cart.

Last summer, Cruz arrived at the church at 6 a.m. -- four hours before the pantry opens -- and there already were 18 people ahead of her. This Saturday though, after the area was hit by a blizzard that brought 12 inches of snow to some parts of the city, Cruz headed over to the church at 9:45 a.m. and still managed to be only the 35th person there.

Ahead of the snowfall that inundated the East Coast Friday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered the city?s Department of Homeless Services to double efforts to connect the city?s unsheltered with a warm place to sleep. But for those needing help with other basics, like food, the snow seems to have complicated the quest for help.

Cruz, who left the church with a friend toting a cart full of food Saturday, suspected that the people who normally come from uptown must not have made it because of the snow.

"Today, it was only the people who live around the church," Cruz said. "It's great for us."

About 15 percent of Americans experienced food insecurity -- inconsistent or unreliable access to food -- last year, according to a September Department of Agriculture report. Around the state, about 13 percent of New Yorkers have insecure access to food.

Though Friday's storm prevented some of Xavier?s regulars from making it to the pantry, in other ways the weekend was not atypical, especially not in comparison to the challenges Superstorm Sandy presented.

On the second Saturday of every month, the pantry services around 125 people, but volunteer Alex Hoffman estimated that it had seen only 40 to 50 the day after the storm. Saturday morning, the seats in the church's basement where people wait their turn to shop for food weren't close to filled and some of the food stations had no lines at all.

"This is the lowest I've ever seen it before," said Hoffman, an AmeriCorps volunteer who has worked at the church since September.

Cassandra Agredo, executive director of Xavier Mission, explained that the church didn't have to prepare differently for this weekend's blizzard.

"A lot of our volunteers live in the neighborhood and they'll trek on over and make sure we've got what we need. We generally don?t have to take huge precautions," Agredo said.

In addition to the food pantry, the church is part of a network of 50 faith-based shelters around the city that accommodate people overnight. The Xavier shelter typically sees only 10 to 12 men on average during the winter, but all 18 beds were filled on Friday.

The men arrive by bus in the evening from a drop-in location at 40th Street and Ninth Avenue, and get picked up again the next morning. The only difference the snow made was that the bus was not able to pick the men up Saturday morning because of the weather. The drop-in center instead gave them Metro cards so that they wouldn't be stranded.

During Sandy, on the other hand, one of Agredo's volunteers walked all the way from Riverdale in the Bronx to open the shelter because subways weren't running. The church had no power for a week, but still kept the shelter and the weekly soup kitchen open.

Having lost all its perishable goods, the church had to ask neighbors to bring over peanut butter and jelly, and bread. "We were making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for hours and hours and hours," said Agredo.

Worthy of a high price

MayhewGetty Images

One of the biggest problems with the Lions of late is that they have too few players on the roster who can or will lead from within.

G.M. Martin Mayhew realize the team needs those qualities.? He blames the absence of in-house leadership in 2012 on the fact that the guys who would have provided leadership were injured.

?That was tested last year in a big way because of [safety Louis] Delmas being injured and not on the practice field,? Mayhew said, via Anwar Richardson of MLive.com.? ?You guys know how much energy he brings to practice, and the tempo he played with, and he was sorely missed.? Not just the games he missed, but also the practices.? He barely practiced last year.?

Mayhew also mentioned defensive lineman Corey Williams, receiver Nate Burleson, and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, who started every game but was injured during training camp and the preseason.? Vanden Bosch already is gone, and Williams and Burleson may not be far behind.

Mayhew acknowledges that more leaders need to be development from within.? ?That is an area that we need younger players who are developing with us to take more of a leadership role, but there also can be some opportunities that we may need to bring in some guys that have some of those qualities,? Mayhew said.

?Part of developing as a player is not just developing on the field, but it?s developing leadership, locker room, off-the-field, and you start to feel a little bit more comfortable every year.? We need some guys to step up that way, also.?

He didn?t mention them by name, but Mayhew possibly is referring to players like quarterback Matthew Stafford, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, and receiver Calvin Johnson.? All are talented, well regarded, and highly compensated.? It?s time for each of them to take real ownership in the team and to hold their teammates accountable.

And also to urge Mayhew and coach Jim Schwartz to avoid the temptation to draft or sign talented but troubled players like Titus Young.
