Silence is golden as "The Artist" scoops 7 BAFTAs (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Black-and-white turned to gold as silent movie "The Artist" won seven BAFTA awards including best film at a ceremony in London on Sunday, raising expectations of a strong showing at the Academy Awards.

Meryl Streep clinched the leading actress prize for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher both as a politician at the height of her power and as a frail elderly lady suffering from dementia, in "The Iron Lady."

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards are not always an accurate predictor of what is to come at the Oscars, but they are the most coveted film honors outside of the United States.

Streep, looking regal in a sparkling black gown with her hair piled high in an elaborate style, lost a shoe on her way up to the stage to collect her award.

"That couldn't be worse," she said, having recovered her shoe, to laughter and cheers from the audience at the Royal Opera House in the popular Covent Garden area of London.

Apart from Streep, the undisputed star of the night was The Artist, a French-made romance set in Hollywood in the 1920s and 30s. It had been nominated for 12 awards and walked away with the prizes for best film, leading actor, director, original screenplay, costumes, cinematography and music.

The film, which tells the story of a star of silent movies whose career is destroyed by the advent of "talkies," had already done well at the Golden Globes and now has further momentum ahead of Oscar night in two weeks.

"I'm so proud that Brad Pitt pronounced my name so well," said Michel Hazanavicius, the film's director, as he accepted his award from the Hollywood heart-throb.

The film's star, Jean Dujardin, was a surprise winner in the leading actor category. George Clooney had been the bookmakers' favorite for his part as a man steering his family through troubled times while his wife is in a coma in "The Descendants."

"SOMETHING REAL" ABOUT MRS THATCHER

The Artist overshadowed the Cold War espionage thriller "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," which picked up only two prizes out of the 11 for which it had been nominated, outstanding British film and best adapted screenplay.

Peter Straughan, who created the script from a classic John Le Carre novel, brought both humor and emotion to the ceremony in his acceptance speech.

"I'd just like to thank The Artist for not being adapted from a book," he said to laughter from the audience.

Straughan went on to pay homage to the co-winner of the award, his wife Bridget O'Connor, who died before the film was made.

"She wrote all the good bits and I made the coffee. So Bridget, I love you, I miss you, this is for you," he said.

Streep, who has already won a Golden Globe for her turn as Thatcher, is heavily favored to bag an Oscar for the role.

"The ambition of this film, The Iron Lady, was to look at the life of the iron lady from the inside out and to locate something real, maybe hidden, but truthful, in the life of someone that we've all decided we all know everything about already," she said in her acceptance speech.

It was a second BAFTA win for Streep, who had received the 1981 leading actress prize for "The French Lieutenant's Woman."

While her performance in The Iron Lady has been well-received in Thatcher's home country, the overall film has had lukewarm reviews.

The choice to dwell on the subject of Thatcher's dementia has been criticized, not least by current British Prime Minister David Cameron, who like Thatcher is a Conservative.

Martin Scorsese had a mixed night at the BAFTAs. His first family film, "Hugo," a 3-D adventure exploring the magic of movie-making in its early days, had been nominated for nine awards but went home with just two, for sound and production design.

Scorsese was also nominated in the documentary category for his film "George Harrison: Living in the Material World," but there too he lost out, to "Senna," a film about the life of the formula one champion Ayrton Senna.

However, the "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull" director went home with a BAFTA Fellowship celebrating his life in cinema.

Your Guide to Small Business Strategic Planning for Today and ...

Strategic planning for business could follow a selection of formats, but there are some imperative parts that should really be included in every plan. Those elements include:

Articulating a purpose

Setting your company goals

Creating methods for achieving each goal

Developing action plans for implementing those systems

Identifying means for monitoring success

Hopefully, you have already taken the time to prepare a business proposal, an outline that is a requirement for any company that needs to borrow start-up funds or wants to qualify for a bank line of credit. The business plan can help you create your strategy.

A business proposal will include a mission statement. That mission statement, your company?s strategic planning template, will usually define purpose.

For instance, Nike strives to be the ?world?s leading sports and fitness company?. In that short sentence, the company has defined what the company does and will do. It's very important to try and be categorical when defining your purpose. Strategic planning for small business is less effective when the purpose is imprecise.

If your purpose is to be a web retailer, you need to decide ?what? items you will sell. This can also help you identify your advertising niche. Your company's organizational goals are those things that will enable you to gain your purpose or mission. Some of the things which you may include in this part of your plan are:

Source of products to sell, wholesalers to cope with

Renting a storefront or making a website

Choosing customers, salespeople, website designers

Finding furnishings for traditional storefronts

Finding funding; borrowing, finding stockholders, and so on.

Guessing 1st profits, making the 1st sale, setting a break-even point, building sales goals

The primary purpose of strategic planning for business is making techniques for achieving each goal. Before a company should ever begin conducting business, they should have developed a technique for long and short-term success.

In many cases, the elements overlap. As an example, finding wholesalers to address is an organizational goal, but it is also a method for making the 1st sale.

Corporations sometimes implement strategies before they complete their strategic planning for small business. Excitement about the future is a great thing, but do not let excitement sidetrack you. Take some time. Make sure that any strategy that is implemented fits with the total plan.

Monitoring success is a very large part of strategic planning for business, although it is commonly overlooked. Tracking sales is the single thing that many firms do. Monitoring where those sales come from is important for developing effective marketing methods in the future. Never forget to consider the bigger picture.

There is not any doubt that successful business strategic development results from discovering and creating opportunities and meeting challenges others have not addressed. It is motivating your people, making informed, difficult calls for your organisation, and accepting responsibility for the results of your actions. It's the ability to inspire people and to give them the incentive to surpass their own limits to reach a common goal. Strategic success, regularly with the aid of a strategic planning template, will dramatically enhance your corporation's profitability, identify the missing pieces in your business puzzle, and reduce nonessential net result costs.

Ideas To Help You Feel Beautiful At Every Age | Recreation & Sports

Although it is a wonderful idea that beauty exists in the eye of the beholder, each of us wants to look as beautiful as possible not just in our eyes, but in the eyes of others as well. As common as it seems, many people are unfamiliar with the basics of beauty. This article provides several tips that you can apply to help put on your best face.

To make your eyelash curler work even better, give it a blast of hot air from your blow dryer, but let it cool slightly before using it on your lashes. The heat will help to set the curl so your lashes stay defined longer than they would with a cold curler.

The eye shadow you use should depend on your eye color. By picking the wrong color, your eyes will not stand out. For example, those with blue and green eyes should pick shades that are warm in color such as light purples, brown, and gray. Women with brown eyes should wear darker shades, like dark greens and blues.

To get those wonderful finger nails that are nice and long, massage Vaseline into your cuticles one time a week. This will encourage nail growth because you are essentially feeding the new nail. Make sure when you are using nail polish, you are also using a top coat that will help keep your nails from chipping.

To make your smile look whiter, avoid orangey or yellowish lipstick shades, which can accentuate stains and other discolorations. Stick to cool pinks, blue-reds, and plumy shades, all of which help to make your teeth look whiter, since they are cooler colors. Remember that really bright shades, no matter the tone, will draw attention to your mouth?and your teeth.

To open up your pores and have any blemishes removed, steaming is a wonderful option. Put your face over a bowl of steaming hot water with a dry towel placed on you head. Do this as long as you can being careful not to burn yourself. To shut the pores making your skin layer more firms, splash your face with cold water.

Invest in a good set of makeup brushes for applying your makeup. Brushes can be expensive, but they make a world of difference in the quality of your makeup applications. You can look at searching on the internet merchants for excellent deals on excellent makeup brushes to avoid wasting money in case you are on a tight budget.

If you have ever suffered through a cold sore, then you know they are no fun and will want to stave them off at the first hint you are getting one. You could try to dab a small amount of moisturizer over the area to keep it from getting worse.

While it is important to love yourself for who you are, it can still be possible for you to look better and feel better about yourself without major changes. Family Violence Detective Resigns Amid Investigation ? CBS Dallas ...

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) ? A Dallas Police detective at the center of an investigation over failing to follow up on domestic violence case is leaving the department amid a scandal involving his performance.

CBS 11 has learned that Detective Mickey East submitted his retirement Thursday evening.

The resignation follows a two-year investigation into his work after hundreds of domestic and family violence case files were found in the garage of his home.

The detective initially told his supervisors that he was just overworked and stored the files in the garage so he could work from home.? But department officials had concerns that the cases being neglected.

?It was very disappointing to know that a detective would not do everything he could to investigate the cases,? Deputy Chief Sheryll Scott told CBS 11.

After a two year examination of Detective East?s 2,274 cases, department officials found that 509 of those victims had suffered more abuse by the same perpetrators otherwise known as re-victimization.? ?It?s a tragic situation and I hate to speculate as to why a police officer would make that decision it?s a very dangerous situation let me put it that way,? said Jennifer Morrison, the Executive Director of New Beginning, a Garland domestic violence support organization.

Morrison says it takes courage for victims to seek help and often go back into abusive relationships when they don?t get it.
?They reach out to get help when they aren?t able to help themselves then they are met with these barriers they go back and by the time they go back into that relationship they buy into that minimization.?

Detective East was facing discipline for failing to follow up and adverse conduct when he submitted his retirement papers.? The resignation comes one day after the results of his internal investigation were released.

The department says it will attempt to make contact with those abuse victims whose cases were never filed, but it is believed the statute of limitations has expired on most of them.

The department has taken steps to reduce the workload of family violence detectives by adding seven more officers to the unit and a new database is expected to improve the monitoring of cases.

The Creative Writing Interviews: Craig Batty | Creative Writing Studies

The Creative Writing Interviews form a series of interviews with contributors to our Creative Writing Studies list. Find out about their work and approach towards writing.

Frances Haynes writes: ?Craig Batty is a screenwriter and script consultant, and has written articles on screenwriting and media writing for publications such as Writing in Education,?ScriptWriter?Magazine,?New Writing?and the?Journal of Screenwriting.

He is the co-author of three books, Writing for the Screen: Creative and Critical Approaches,?Media Writing:?A?Practical Introduction?and? The Creative Screenwriter: Exercises to Expand Your Craft?and the author of Movies that Move Us: Screenwriting and the Power of the Protagonist?s Journey. You can see his books here. Craig is also a contributor to our forthcoming publication, Teaching Creative Writing.

Craig is Senior Lecturer in Creative and Professional Writing at RMIT University, Australia. You can find out more about Craig here.

Craig, what do you write?

I write scripts ? for screen and radio ? as well as books and articles about screenwriting and media writing.? I must admit that I?ve slipped into the ?writing about writing? realm recently, so I must remember to keep being creative!? That said, I do really enjoy writing about writing.? I?m also dabbling with some prose at the minute, which I haven?t done a lot of since my Masters degree.

Whom do you write for?

I guess a lot of people say they write for themselves, and to some extent that?s true (pouring out your emotions!), but I?d say that I write for other people. ?I write for an audience (to make them laugh or cry, or both); I write for students (books and articles about writing); and I write for lecturers/educators (books and articles about writing and teaching).

What achievement are you most proud of as a writer?

I?d say having books published.? There?s something special about all the kinds of writing I do, and it?s great to see your name on the credits of something, for example.? But at the minute, seeing books with my name on is a proud moment.? It?d be nice to see my name in the TV Times, but in a library will do for now!

What involvement do you have / have you had with creative writing as a university/college subject/discipline?

Quite a lot, actually.? I?ve taught in three universities in the UK, and now I?m teaching at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.? I regularly give talks and deliver workshops at other universities and educational institutions, as well as places like the BFI and writing festivals.? I?m on the NAWE Higher Education Committee, and attend and speak at a lot of writing- and teaching-based conferences.

What is your ambition as a writer?

To be happy?!? To publish creative work as well as critical work, and to work with emerging high-profile writers as a consultant and coach.? I guess being able to give up the day job and just write is appealing ? though I?d be afraid of getting bored and lazy.? I need to think about that one!
