Can I Learn to Read Faster and Get Through My Backlog of Books?

Can I Learn to Read Faster and Get Through My Backlog of Books?Dear Lifehacker,
Over the years I've collected hundreds of books I want to read, but no matter what I do they just keep piling up. Is there a way I can read faster and get through this backlog quickly?

Sincerely,
Buried Under Bradbury

Dear BUB,
We certainly understand your pain. It's easy to get buried under a bunch of books you purchased (or just find yourself with an Amazon wish list of 200 titles). Thankfully, getting caught up on all those books isn't always as hard as you might think. Here are a few different ideas for getting through you backlog.

Increase Your Reading Speed

Can I Learn to Read Faster and Get Through My Backlog of Books?Speed reading is all about reading as fast as you can, and it's a suprisingly easy technique to learn. You can teach yourself speed reading with a webapp like Spreeder, but speed reading is based on a few key techniques that anyone can pick up:

  • Stop saying the words in your head: Subvocalization is the habit most of us have where we "hear" words in our minds as we read them. Breaking that habit can dramatically increase reading speed. All you need to do is disengage the speech mechanism in your brain, which means chewing gum, humming, or even eating while you're reading. Another method is to repeat "A-E-I-O-U" as you read to teach yourself to stop reading with your mouth.
  • Avoid "Back Skips": When we're reading we tend to skip our eyes back and dwell on the word we just read. This slows us down. Unfortunately, the only way to break this habit is to admit you do it and notice when you do.
  • Point at the text: One of the more surprising speed reading techniques is "meta guiding." This simply means pointing at the text as you read it. You still need to concentrate on each word if you want to actually retain any information, but it's one way speed reading programs teach you to quickly get through a text.

Speed reading isn't for everyone, and while some people can certainly retain a lot of the information they read, many people can't. So, if you're interested, give speed reading a try, but don't feel like you have to commit to it just to get through all your books. You have other options.

Skip the Parts You Can (or Skip Chapters Entirely)

Can I Learn to Read Faster and Get Through My Backlog of Books?Another trick often associated with speed reading is skimming the text. As former British Prime Minister Arthur James Balfour once said, "He has only half learned the art of reading who has not added to it the more refined art of skipping and skimming."

Skimming is one of method of speed reading, and while it's not great for comprehension (don't do this in your college textbooks), it's a good way to quickly get through your backlog of books. This works especially well for non-fiction when you might not be interested in certain parts of a book. Professor David Davis shares his strategy for effective skimming:

  1. Begin with the introduction or preface. Read it carefully to find the main argument, strategy, and claims.
  2. Read the final chapter or conclusion.
  3. Finally, go through each chapter and read the introductory paragraph and the final paragraph.

Obviously you don't want to do this for every single book you're trying to get through, but it's an effective strategy for topics you're mildly interested in. Of course, if a few chapters sound more interesting than others, you can pop in and read just those ones. Skimming works especially well for history books, essay collections, memoirs, or current interest books. Photo by Arria Belli.

Listen to Audiobooks When You Can't Read

Can I Learn to Read Faster and Get Through My Backlog of Books?Chances are that you can't read all the time. After all, you have to drive places, cook meals, and exercise. For those times when you can't have a book in your hand (or it'd be dangerous to do so), audiobooks are a great way to fill the silence and catch up on your backlog.

Most major book sellers like Amazon, iTunes, and Barnes and Noble all sell audiobooks. Also, Audible allows you to buy audiobooks, and also offers a subscription service that gives you one book a month for $14.95 (a considerable savings since audiobooks tend to sell for $30-$40).

If you're a little wary of audiobooks, you don't actually have to pay to try them out. You can find free books on Audible with a Google search, and grabbing one free book on Audible is usually pretty easy provided you're willing to try the service free for 30 days. Sites like Books Should Be Free and Open Culture also offer free audiobooks.

Read a Couple Books at Once

Can I Learn to Read Faster and Get Through My Backlog of Books?Last year, Jeff Ryan set a New Year's resolution that he'd read 366 books in a year. That seems like a hefty goal, but, writing for Slate, Ryan explains how he did it:

The idea of a full book a day?going from title page to back-jacket blurbs?went quickly out the window. I read lots of books at once, and can go days making progress in five or six volumes without technically finishing any of them. Then there are flat-out busy days, where the actual drop-dead demands of my job and parenting mean there is not a second to spare for reading. My worst lull was during a Florida trip, when I barely plowed through the 300 pages of John Irving's The Fourth Hand. And that was during a whole week of family vacation-the time when normal people read more. It took a month of catchup to get back at pace.

Of course, he combined that with a few other tactics, including listening to audiobooks, as well as comics and graphic novels. Still, his tactic of reading multiple books at once is one way to get through your backlog provided you can differentiate between all of them. In this case, it's likely best to stick to different genres so you don't confuse yourself too much. Photo by J Brew.

Abandon the Books that Aren't Working for You

Can I Learn to Read Faster and Get Through My Backlog of Books? This seems like common sense, but it's still worth noting: if you're a couple chapters into a book and you're not enjoying it, stop reading it. Once you stop, think about why you're not enjoying it. Is it just the wrong book at the wrong time? Then put it back in your backlog and wait for the right time. Is it a book someone recommended and you're not enjoying it? Then return it to the seller, pass it along to someone else, or donate it to a library. You're not going to enjoy every book, so don't waste time on books you don't like.

Depending on just how tall your backlog of books is, getting through them shouldn't take too much time. Set up a schedule to help you fit reading into your day, and start cranking through all those books. Photo by mikael altemark.

Good luck,

First alleged Samsung Galaxy S4 render emerges

Android Central

It’s that time of year again, boys and girls -- the first purported Samsung Galaxy S4 render has emerged online. This morning Samsung fansite SamMobile has posted a photo of a render showing what it claims is the next flagship phone from the Korean manufacturer. The image, which the site says was passed to it by a Samsung insider, appears to be a photo of the render as displayed on a monitor or other LCD display.

The alleged Galaxy S4 (or Galaxy S IV, if you prefer) shot shows a Galaxy Note 2-like design, with accentuated, rounded corners and no physical buttons. The device also has an extremely minimal horizontal bezel, along with the usual assortment of buttons, ports and sensors in the usual places.

There’s no way of verifying the authenticity of this image, but SamMobile has a pretty decent track record when it comes to Samsung leaks. Nevertheless, given how many inaccurate Galaxy S3 renders did the rounds last year, we’re inclined take this latest pic with a hefty dose of salt for the time being.

Even if this image is a legitimate Samsung creation, there’s no guarantee that the device it shows will become the Galaxy S4. Samsung is notoriously secretive with its flagship products, even going as far as designing and developing multiple variations of the Galaxy S3 to reduce the likelihood that the real thing would leak. So there’s a chance this design might be just one of many on the table at this early stage. (Remember that buttonless Galaxy S3 that we saw just weeks before the announcement?)

In a related post, the site reports that Samsung will show an early Galaxy S4 prototype to a handful of partner executives and other big-wigs behind closed doors at next week’s CES. If Samsung ships the S4 this spring, as is expected, we wouldn’t be surprised if a few VIPs got an early look at what the company’s cooking in Las Vegas. CES has always been a big business-to-business show, after all.

For now, all we have is an image that may or may not be an upcoming Samsung phone. But if this is the Galaxy S4, we know a few Android nerds who’ll be celebrating Samsung’s new-found affinity for on-screen buttons.

Expanding into international markets with the franchise model ...

Far too many retailers are relying on manual processes for their supplier management, critical path control and performance tracking in order to manage an expanding franchise operation ? risking both profitability and corporate reputation as a result.

Dominic Potter, UK Managing Director of?Momentis?Systems?highlights the risks facing UK retailers looking to expand abroad and explains the role that a streamlined model can play in enabling highly scalable franchise business operations.

International Marketplace

Franchising is increasingly being seen as a way to de-risk the business model and is gaining growing traction. From Debenhams to the George at ASDA brand, retailers are exploiting the benefits of a lower cost route to market and local knowledge to achieve international expansion.

The model is compelling: no investment in physical assets or long-term rental; access to strong local knowledge and commitment; whilst retaining complete control over the product quality, brand and messaging.

But for many retailers, the franchise vision is yet to be achieved. For some, a lack of confidence and trusted processes has resulted in repeated postponement; for others, ill-conceived strategies have resulted in an unexpectedly high investment in manual effort to manage the complexity of multi-national franchising. As a result, far too many companies are simply not achieving the scale required to achieve both the vision and expected levels of revenue.

Missed Opportunity

Despite globalisation, improvements in communication infrastructure and an increasingly synergistic international marketplace, retailers cannot simply scale up successful domestic retail processes and expect to achieve a seamless, profitable franchise operation.

Entering a new market raises a whole heap of issues and challenges to consider ? from ensuring franchisees in a different hemisphere see the right season?s products, to the prohibition of some religious and cultural symbols, as well as a ban on certain types of leather in some countries. Failure to reflect these issues can result in an entire collection being held in customs indefinitely ? or franchisees being offered goods that are completely wrong for the market or season.

Retailers need to be able to control the stock that is offered to each store to reflect seasonality, location, and religious/cultural sensibility. However, to be successful and profitable, retailers need to be able to do this without requiring a massive manual effort.

Retaining Control

Rather than taking the time to tailor the catalogue for each franchise, organisations need to streamline the process. By setting attributes for each customer, the catalogue should automatically reflect local sensibilities; each franchisee can log onto a portal and only see a relevant subset of the collection, ensuring inappropriate items, or those that may cause delay at customs, are either not offered or are flagged to the franchisee. Pricing is automatically converted into the relevant local currency; whilst customs documentation is automatically created, further removing an overhead for both franchisor and franchisee.

Taking this approach not only radically reduces the manual effort associated with managing the requirements of each franchisee but also eliminates the risk of inappropriate products being dispatched, customs delays or financial confusion. In addition, the portal approach enables the retailer to have far greater visibility over the franchisee order process ? from ensuring franchisees place orders before the Publication closes to proactively addressing potential incomplete orders during the 72 hour window between catalogue closure and placing the final order with a supplier.

A portal ensures franchisees have full visibility of the location of goods in the supply chain at any time, and when they will be delivered. It also eases the process of providing sales figures to the retailer ? either direct into the portal or via a spreadsheet that can be uploaded into the system. This in depth insight into local trends in sales performance can be used both to inform on-going international expansion and aid the franchisee in the buying process, exploiting the highly effective tools used by the retailer in the domestic market to improve the relevance of the product mix.

Rapid Expansion

A centralised, portal-based approach to franchisee communication enables retailers to streamline the management of the franchisee network, driving down costs and providing a flexible and scalable platform for rapid expansion.

Creating a transparent system that makes it easy to view the collection, place and track orders, and manage the customs documentation in a single place - with the additional option of accessing the information remotely via a mobile device - plays a key role in building the trusted relationship that is vital to a successful and profitable franchise network.

It is this combination of compelling franchisee offer with highly effective and efficient management of the franchise network that will be key to providing retailers with the confidence to embark upon international expansion and scale up rapidly to realise significant additional revenue.

Mobile-Ad Frenzy Sends Facebook Up 5% - Business Insider

Jan. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Facebook Inc., owner of the largest social-networking service, rose 5.2 percent amid optimism that the company will be able to step up sales growth from advertising shown to users on mobile devices.

The stock jumped to $28 at the close in New York. Today?s gain came after analysts at JPMorgan Chase & Co. increased their Facebook share-price target to $35, citing ?strong advertising trends.?

Facebook is benefiting from growing interest in new ad features that let companies target the more than 1 billion users on the service, many of them by way of wireless gadgets. Revenue tied to mobile advertising should surpass sales from similar spending on desktops in 2014, according to JPMorgan.

?We are incrementally positive on Facebook shares into 2013 as we believe it remains very early in the trajectory of Facebook?s mobile advertising,? the JPMorgan team, led by Doug Anmuth, wrote today in a note. ?Importantly, we believe marketers are also realizing that there is branding and awareness value in Facebook ads and that users don?t necessarily have to click through to drive returns.?

The company probably boosted overall advertising growth 49 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, up from a 36 percent increase in the third quarter, the analysts said. Mobile, driven by the growing number of users accessing the service on smartphones and tablets, should make up 27 percent of ad revenue in the quarter, up from 14 percent in the third quarter.

For 2013, Facebook should generate $6.69 billion in sales, up 7 percent from an earlier estimate, and $8.24 billion in 2014, up 7.6 percent from the prior estimate, according to the note.

While mobile is boosting revenue, desktop advertising is also benefiting from new ad tools, including the Facebook Exchange, which helps companies target marketing messages based on users? past Web activities.

Checks with advertising agencies, partners and marketers all ?came back more positive? than expected for the Facebook Exchange service, Ralph Schackart, an analyst at William Blair & Co., wrote today in a note.

?Our channel checks suggest FBX ads are being rapidly adopted and are significantly underpriced, with the potential to increase threefold,? Schackart wrote.

Secret Principles of Immortality, Edition 1

I posted a comment at Smithsonian Magazine's article on The World's Oldest Living Things, and at Project Syndicate's article asking the question "Should We Live to 1000?" re-stating a principle that has developed slowly in my mind for about thirty years---and I come from a family of geniuses. The principle is that immortality consists of four distinct categories or principles, which are generally realized alone and individually, without strong support from the others.
