Duties and Responsibilities
The Urbanization and Global Environmental Change (UGEC) Project is seeking a full-time Executive Officer beginning August 1, 2012. The initial term is for one year, renewable through 2015, pending availability of funds. The position will be located in the UGEC International Project Office at the Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, USA.
The Executive Officer (EO) will work closely with the co-chairs and the project?s Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) to fulfill the goals and objectives of the project. The EO?s responsibilities fall into two broad categories. Approximately three-quarters of the person?s time will be dedicated to advancing the UGEC scientific agenda through developing publications based on original research and synthesis of scientific literature and disseminating and outreaching to practitioners. Research and publication is an integral component of this position. Responsibilities include developing, conducting and overseeing a diverse portfolio of research activities, reporting to and liaising with co-chairs, collaborating with scientists on the UGEC research team, writing articles for publication, networking both nationally and internationally, taking responsibility for operations of the International Project Office (IPO) in Tempe, writing and preparing research grants, spearheading the project?s communication strategy, and representing the UGEC project at international meetings. The remaining quarter of the EO?s time will be devoted to project administration and support, including coordinating the preparation of project reports and financial statements, steering and producing newsletters and policy briefs, conceiving, arranging and coordinating workshops and project meetings, and maintaining project databases and web sites. The EO will also work in close contact with the International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP) Secretariat and liaise with other IHDP Core Projects.
Days and schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm; may include occasional evenings and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications
M.A in geography, urban planning, development/environment, urban studies, environmental science, urban economics, sustainability or related disciplines; research publications in relevant subject matter; demonstrated experience in research and/or project management plus 3 years of related work experience.

Ph.D. in geography, urban planning, development/environment, urban studies, environmental science, urban economics, or related disciplines; research publications; demonstrated experience in financial management and budgeting; demonstrated experience in relevant science coordination and project management; grant writing; public speaking; experience working with initiatives through to completion; demonstrated knowledge of urbanization and global environmental change issues; experience working as a member of a team; demonstrated experience working with research foundations and/or NGOs and/or government; experience traveling internationally.
Department Statement/General Info
The Global Institute of Sustainability conducts research, education, and problem-solving related to sustainability, with a special focus on urban environments. The Institute initiates and nurtures work on issues of sustainability across many departments on the four campuses of ASU, and collaborates with other academic institutions, governments, businesses and industries, and community groups locally, nationally, and globally.
UGEC supports, generates, and promotes research activities related to urbanization and global environmental change. It also seeks to build linkages, dialogues, and exchanges among the research, practitioner, and policy communities. Key themes within UGEC research include urban processes that contribute to global environmental change, pathways through which global environmental change affects the urban system, interactions between human and physical systems within the urban system that shape impacts of Global Environmental Change (GEC), and interactions between human and physical systems within the urban system that shape responses to GEC.
