The Canadian airline said 200 new jobs will be created as a result of the launch. Shares of the company rose almost 3% on the back of the news this afternoon, to $1.75.?
"With the introduction today of rouge, enters today's growing leisure travel market on a truly competitive basis," said the company's executive VP and chief commerical officer, Ben Smith, at a news conference in Toronto to unveil the new leisure airline. ?
"In partnership with Vacations, part of our new leisure group, rouge will leverage the strengths of 's extensive network, operational expertise and frequent flyer reward program in order to offer Canadians great value for their vacation travel."
Special introductory fares are now on sale to Venice, Italy and Edinburgh, Scotland - routes not currently operated by the airline - as well as to Athens, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Costa Rica.
seasonal services from Toronto and Montreal to Athens will also be flown by the leisure carrier, while existing flights to Cuba, the Dominican, Jamaica and Costa Rica that are operated in cooperation with Vacations will now be flown by rouge, effective in July.?
Flights to Venice and Edinburgh are starting as low as $949 round-trip with the special introductory fares, including all taxes fees, charges and surcharges, while flights to Dominican and Jamaica can be found for as low as $269 each way.?
All the introductory fares, which are available until Dec. 25, are based on Toronto departures.
The leisure airline's flights for the 2013 summer schedule will depart from 's main hub at Toronto Pearson airport, and will also operate flights to Athens from Montreal.?
The rouge fleet will initially be made up of two 767-300ER aircraft to operate transatlantic flights, and two Airbus A319 aircraft to operate North American flights.
These aircraft will be released from 's existing fleet as the mainline carrier takes delivery of two new 777-300ER aircraft in 2013.
The company said that new destinations will be added to the new leisure carrier as starts to take delivery of new 787 Dreamliner aircraft in 2014, freeing up planes for the rouge fleet.
Subject to demand, rouge could operate up to 20 767-300ER aircraft and 30 Airbus A319 aircraft, for a total of 50 aircraft.?
"With leisure time at a premium, rouge will combine affordable fares, great service and choice leisure destinations with those benefits offered by and Vacations that are valued most by vacation travellers," said president and CEO of the company's leisure group, Michael Friisdahl.?
